Advance shipping notices

ASN advance shipping notice, issued by a supplier to inform the warehouse operator of a shipment to arrive in the near future, usually transmitted electronically. 

Another series of database tables is used to track the flow of material advance shipping notice (ANS) table for those receipts that are expected soon, putaway tables for items received that are to be stored, replenish tables for forward pick areas, pick tables for pick waves in each area, load consolidation tables, truck manifest tables, and additional move tables for other moves not specified above. There may be more than one version of each table, one as planned and another as executed, or these characteristics may be captured in one table. These tables, which are often subdivided by priority, are particularly important when automatic identification, such as bar code, is used to control flow. In the situation of batch picking with zoning the pick table needs to contain details on zone, picker, pick wave, sorting area, packing method, and so on. (see Table 8).

The second VMI transaction informs the customer what product will be delivered by the supplier. There are two transactions being used for this function. The most frequently used is the purchase order acknowledgment, referred to as the 855. This document contains the product numbers and quantities ordered by the supplier on the customer s behalf. A few customers skip the 855 and rely on the advance ship notice (ASN), or 856, to alert them to the order and shipment. This document differs from the 855 in both timing and content. The 856 is sent after the shipment has been made instead of at the time of the order. The 856 contains only the part numbers shipped as weU as additional information, such as carrier and waybill informatirm. For the purposes of VMI, either of these documents works well if properly implemented.

Now the flow moves in two directions. In the first instance, it moves to delivery of the finished products or services. Fulfillment processing takes place in accordance with the delivery charmel set up by the customer. Shipping advice should be available and an advance shipping notice (ASN) sent to the customer at the appropriate time, advising of the proposed delivery schedule. This data should also flow to the warehouse management system (WMS) and transportation management system (TMS) set up...
