If compaction occurs as a result of production careful monitoring is required. The Ekofisk Field in the Norwegian North Sea made headlines when, as a result of hydrocarbon production, the pores of the fine-grained carbonate reservoir collapsed and the platforms on the seabed started to sink. The situation was later remedied by inserting steel sections into the platform legs. Compaction effects are also an issue in the Groningen gas field in Holland where subsidence in the order of one meter is expected at the surface.

In 1789 M. H. Natural gas as distributed in the UK is obtained from various sources. These comprise primarily the southern North Sea basin, northern North Sea fields (both British and Norwegian), Morecambe Bay from the Irish Sea (used primarily for winter peaks) and gas from world sources imported in small quantities as liquefied natural gas (TNG). Gas from the different fields is of very consistent quality, and further blending, conditioning, etc. allows a gas of very consistent quality and specification to be distributed.

A complete range of instrumentation is available from portable units to automatic systems utilising many probes. Charles John Pedersen (1904-1989) was born in Pusan, Korea, to a Korean mother and Norwegian father. Warm and salty surface currents in the western North Atlantic (e.g., the Gulf Stream) transport heat to the Norwegian-Greenland Seas where it is transferred to the atmosphere. This heat helps moderate the climate of northern Europe. The cooling increases the density resulting in formation of the now cold and salty North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) (Worthington, 1970). The NADW travels south through the North and South Atlantic and then joins the Circumpolar Current that travels virtually unimpeded in a clockwise direction around the Antarctic Continent.
