PEDERSEN, CHARLES JOHN (1904-1989). An American bom in Korea, Pedersen received a M.S. from M.I.T. in 1927. In 1987 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work in elucidating mechanisms of molecular recognition, which are fundamental to the enzymic catalysis, regulation and transport. He reported that alkali metal ions could be bonnd by crown ethers into a more rigid, layered structure, in which the alkali metal ion was bound into the center of the ring. This field of study is called host-guest chemistry,... [Pg.1221]

Charles John Pedersen (1904-1989) was born in Pusan, Korea, to a Korean mother and Norwegian father. A U.S. citizen, he moved to the United States in the early 1920s and received an M.Sc. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1927. He spent his entire scientific career at the OuPont Company (1927-1969) and received the 1987 Nobel Prize in chemistry. He is among a very small handful of Nobel Prize-winning scientists who never received a formal doctorate. [Pg.666]

Three scholars shared the 1987 Nobel Prize in chemistry for creating supramolecular chemistry, in particular for their development and use of molecules with structure-spec interactions of hi selec-tivitv . Donald James Cram (b. 1919), American chemist, professor at the University of California— Berkeley Charles John Pedersen (1904—1989), American diemist, employee of Dupont Jean-Marie Lehn (b. 1939), French chemist, professor at the Universite de Stradxrurg and College de France in Paris. [Pg.745]
