Snohvit will also be the first major development on the Norwegian continental shelf without support from a floating unit. A sub sea production system on the seabed will feed the land-based LNG plant via a 0.68 m ID, 160 km two-phase pipeline. In addition two chemical lines, an umbilical and a separate pipeline for the transport of carbon dioxide will be included. The unprocessed well stream from Snohvit is separated and the gas is treated and cooled to a temperature below the boiling point (-162 °C) to form LNG. Although the natural gas industry has been a familiar business worldwide for decades, the natural gas industry is a fairly new trade for Norway. The first exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) was carried out as late as in the early nineteen seventies. 2 Since then however, remarkable growth has taken place and Norway is now a major European natural gas supplier. In 2002 Norway supplied approximately 12 % of the consumption in the OECD Europe, and the Norwegian market share is expected to grow in the years to come. [Pg.308]

Rubble zones are very common in cored mudstones and shales in many regions of the Norwegian continental shelf, and the southwestern Barents Sea seems to be no exception. Three types of rubble zones are recorded in the wells investigated. [Pg.82]

Observations and calculations elsewhere in the Norwegian continental shelf suggest that the cap rock seal may be broken due to the effects of expansion of hydrocarbons as a consequence of uplift and erosion (Caillet et al., 1991). Most fault seals of relevance in the Norwegian continental shelf (NOCS) probably have their origins in the Jurassic syn-rift faulting. While various observations suggest that present-day stress state influences seal capacity, this issue has yet to be resolved. Our current perception of the influence of stress is recorded. Based on tectonic concepts, one may infer that the current regional direction of horizontal stress in the NOCS (North Sea and offshore mid-Norway) has existed since the onset of oceanic spreading in the NE Atlantic in the Early Eocene. Prior to break-up the regional minimum horizontal stress is inferred to have been NW-SE after break-up this is inferred to have become the direction of the maximum horizontal stress. [Pg.150]
