National Survey

Chlorine dioxide uses expanded rapidly in the industrial sector. In 1944, chlorine dioxide was first applied for taste and odor control at a water treatment plant in Niagara Falls, New York. Other water plants recognized the uses and benefits of chlorine dioxide. In 1958, a national survey determined that 56 U.S. water utilities were using chlorine dioxide. The number of plants using chlorine dioxide has grown more slowly since that time.

Consistent with the decline in use among youth in these indicators is the decline in self-reported PCP use among youth and young adults in the household population. In the late 1980s, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) conducted a national survey of lead-based paint in housing. The EPA subsequently sponsored a comprehensive technical report on the HUD-sponsored survey to provide estimates of the extent of lead-based paint in housing. In the EPA report, a home is considered to have lead-based paint if the measured lead concentration on any painted surface is 1.0 mg/cm2 or greater.
