Recently, many health advocates have become concerned with a prescription drug called OxyContin. Manufactured by Purdue Pharma, OxyContin is the brand name for the drug oxycodone hydrochloride. Concern about this drug is a result of its increasing non-medical abuse. In 2003, for example, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that about 2.8 million people older than 12 years of age had used OxyContin at least once non-medically. The problem, perhaps, is that OxyContin is extremely good at doing its job—pain relief. OxyContin is a powerful prescription medication used by millions of people annually to treat severe pain. [Pg.60]

The extent of drug use in 2003 for different drugs is presented in Table 4.1. According to the 2003 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 11.2% of 12- to 17-year-olds reported current use of illicit drugs, 30.5% reported use at least once during their lifetime, and 21.8% reported use within the pastyear. ... [Pg.49]

This surv cy included individuals 12 years of age or older. Personal and self-administered interview s were completed with 67,500 respondents. As it was a household survey, people such as military personnel in military installations, individuals in long-term hospitals, and prisoners were excluded from the sample. As a result, the data cannot be viewed as completely representative of everyone in the 50 states. Nevertheless, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health provides the best single description of frequency and quantity of drug use among a broad age range of people in U.S. society. [Pg.21]

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health data we covered in this chapter and in Ghaptcr 1 showed that well over 60% of Americans drink alcohol and that a minority of them drink heavily. Some of the heavy drinkers develop problems with alcohol to different degrees. When they do, the effects on themselves, their families, and their society are devastating. Accordingly, this question has preoccupied many for many years How do alcohol abuse and dependence develop, or what is their etiology In this last section we briefly present what approaches to the question have been taken and describe the current thinking. [Pg.234]

MDMA increases the levels of neurotransmitters such as 5-HT, dopamine, and norepinephrine by causing release of the neurotransmitters from their storage sites. It causes a significant depletion of neurotransmitters, including 5-HT. The number of new MDMA users has risen since 1993, when there were 168,000 new users. By 2001, this number had reached 1.8 million. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 15.1% of 18- to 25-year-olds surveyed in 2002 had used MDMA at least once in their lifetime. There were 676,000 who had used the drug within the month before the survey. [Pg.161]
