The National Pesticide Survey list (Table 7) is the only one that specifically considers the transformation products (TPs) of pesticides. This is remarkable because in the European Community regulations the importance of TPs of pesticides is indicated [165], and there is no mention of specific TPs. This specification in the European Community list is vague, thus making it difficult for laboratories currently involved in monitoring programs to select and assess the TPs of importance.

The 22 following OPPs and metabolites are on the U.S. National Pesticide Survey list diazinon, dichlorvos, dicrotophos, dimethoate, diphenamiphos sulfone, disulfoton, disulfoton sulfone, disulfoton sulfoxide, fenamiphos, fenamiphos sulfone, fenamiphos sulfoxide, fenitrothion, methyl paraoxon, mevinphos, monocrotophos, omethoate, parathion ethyl, phosphamidon, stirofos, terbufos, tetrachlorvinphos, and merphos. 

The following OPPs were taken off the U.S. National Pesticide Survey list due to significant losses when stored at 4°C parathion-ethyl, parathion-methyl, azinphos-methyl, fenitrothion, demeton, fenthion, diazinon, fonofos, malathion, disulfoton, terbufos, phosmet, and ethion. ... 

The U.S.A., through the National Pesticide Survey, " which was organized by the Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA), established a fist of compounds based on the amount used (>7000 Tons), water solubility (>30 mg/1), and hydrolysis half-life (>25 weeks). The list includes some carbamate pesticides (e.g., aldicarb, propoxur, carbaryl, carbofuran, methiocarb, methomyl, oxamyl, cycloate, butylate, propham, and swep) and various derivatives (e.g., aldicarb sulphone, aldicarb sulphoxide, and 3-hidroxycarbofiiran). In Europe, a list of priority pollutants including pesticides was established in order to protect the environment from the adverse ecological impact of these compounds. ... 

Pesricides are considered as one of the first four caregories of poUuranrs significantly associated with the agricultural practices. The US-EPA concluded that ...more than 75% of die States reported that agriculture activities posed a significant threat to groundwater quality . The US-EPA National Pesticide Survey pointed out the 10.4% of the public wells and 4.2% of the rural wells contained detectible levels of one or more pesticides. ...

The urea pesticides diuron, fluormeturon, neburon and Hnuron cited as potential groundwater contaminants from US EPA in the National Pesticide Survey were quantitatively determined by APCI-LC-MS(-t) [354]. APCI-LC-MS was also used to test for 46 pesticide compounds in shallow groundwater samples from two sandy and two clay catchment areas. Of the neutral polars observed, isopro-turon belonged to the most frequently found compound [351]. Sphid et al. described an APCI-LC-MS method for the determination of isoproturon and different types of pesticides and their degradation products in ground water samples. Detection Umits, recovery, precision and Hnearity data were reported [350].

The US National Pesticide Survey, which was organized by the US Envirorunental Protection Agency (US-EPA), compiled a list of compounds based on the amoimt used (>7000 tons), water solubility (>30 mg/L), and hydrolysis half-life (>25 weeks) [23,24]. During the National Pesticide Survey (NPS), 1349 drinking water wells were sampled and analyzed for 101 pesticides, 25 pesticide transformation products (TPs) and nitrate, with a total of 127 analytes. The list also included the chromatographic protocol of the EPA employed in the NPS. The Office of Water of US-EPA has established drinking water regulations and health advisory levels for individual pesticides [25].
