National Survey on Drug Abuse

Consistent with the decline in use among youth in these indicators is the decline in self-reported PCP use among youth and young adults in the household population. The National Survey on Drug Abuse showed a significant decline between 1979 and 1982 in the percent of 12- to 17-year-olds and the percent of 18- to 25-year-olds reporting ever having used PCP, from 3.9 percent to 2.2 percent, and from 14.5 percent to 10.5 percent, respectively (Miller et al. 1983). [Pg.181]

In 1977, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) issued a National Survey on Drug Abuse based on a sampling of 4,594 people. The report estimated that about ten million Americans (6 percent of the population over the age of twelve) had by then used a strong psychedelic, mostly LSD, with somewhat over a million falling into the category of "regular users. ... [Pg.156]

Recently, many health advocates have become concerned with a prescription drug called OxyContin. Manufactured by Purdue Pharma, OxyContin is the brand name for the drug oxycodone hydrochloride. Concern about this drug is a result of its increasing non-medical abuse. In 2003, for example, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that about 2.8 million people older than 12 years of age had used OxyContin at least once non-medically. The problem, perhaps, is that OxyContin is extremely good at doing its job—pain relief. OxyContin is a powerful prescription medication used by millions of people annually to treat severe pain. [Pg.60]

Another important survey conducted by the United States HHS is the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). This survey is conducted in the homes of teens, rather than in school. Currently, the NHSDA survey is taken via a computer survey for drug-related questions. Though there are some inherent limitations in its methodology, as compared to the MTF survey and others not conducted in-home where teens might be timid to reply truthfully, NHSDA is considered to be a very reliable study and its results highly representative of actual drug use. The NHSDA was conducted periodically from 1971 and annually since 1990. [Pg.45]
