When a nano assembly is involved with a directional interaction, the most likely nano element will be a film or surface-based nanoscale operation. Examples include most of the nano-structured films regardless of their detailed morphology. Nano porous film, nano layered film, and nano patterned film are among them. The use of spin-coated polymers was limited to the anti-reflection field, due to the lack of materials having comparatively lower refractive indices. Walheim et al. [48] demonstrated a superior anti-reflection nano-porous polymer-based film. Two immiscible polymers (PMMA and PS) were mixed in tetra-hydrofuron and the solution was spin coated on a substrate made of glass. This process resulted in the formation of the individual polymer domains and it was observed that the PS was selectively dissolved to form a nano-porous film. It was also found that increasing the volume ratio of the pores would result in minimising the refractive index of the material, a phenomenon which is highly desired in the anti-reflection coatings of broadband. [Pg.298]

Considerable work in the area of general research on fuel cells, materials and components was reported by Australia, where the government-sponsored fuel cell R D program has made efficiency improvements in fuel cell electrodes by the formation of platinum nano-clusters in porous carbon by high density plasma sputter mechanisms. Initial experiments on the plasma sputter deposition of platinum onto a porous film has shown great promise and aggregates of platinum were detected in the film with a density profile which decreased away from the surface exposed to the plasma. [Pg.108]

The metal oxides prepared by conventional baking or by the CVD method are, in general, chemically stable, crystalline materials, and show excellent mechanical, electrical, optical, and physical properties. Flexible porous gel films obtained by the surface sol-gel process are totally different. In this chapter, we described a new preparative method for ultrathin metal oxide films by stepwise adsorption of various metal alkoxides. We named this method the surface sol-gel process. Structural characterization of the gel films thus obtained, the electrical property, and formation of nano-composites with organic compounds, were also explained. The soft porous gel contains many active hydroxyl groups at the surface and interior of the film. This facilitates adsorption of organic compounds, and consequent preparation of ultrathin metal oxide/polymer nano-composite films and organization of functional small molecules.
