Since the introduction of the mumps vaccine in 1967 there has been a 99% reduction in reported cases. The mumps vaccine is a live virus preparation of the leryl-Lynn strain. It produces a sub-clinical, non-communicable infection following vaccination. Single doses of mumps vaccine will elicit immunity in 75% to 95% of individuals. Vaccine-induced immunity lasts for more than 30 years. 

Many of the more prominent vaccine preparations in current medical use consist of attenuated viral particles (Table 13.6). Mumps vaccines consist of live attenuated strains of Paramyxovirus parotitidis. In many world regions, it is used routinely to vaccinate children, often a part of a combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. 

Two doses of mumps vaccine are recommended for school age children, international travelers, college students, and healthcare workers born after 1956. 

Mumps vaccine should not be given to pregnant women or immunosup-pressed patients. The vaccine should not be given within 6 weeks (preferably 3 months) of administration of IG. 

The vaccine is given with measles and mumps vaccines (MMR) at 12 to 15 months of age, then at 4 to 6 years.

Mumps vaccine consists of live attenuated strains of Paramyxovirus parotitidis. In many world regions, it is used to routinely vaccinate children, often a part of a combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Several attenuated strains have been developed for use in vaccine preparations. The most commonly used is the Jeryl Linn strain of the mumps vaccine, which is propagated in chick embryo cell culture. This vaccine has been administered to well over 50 million people worldwide and, typically, results in seroconversion rates of over 97%. The Sabin (oral poliomyelitis) vaccine consists of an aqueous suspension of poliomyelitis virus, usually grown in cultures of monkey kidney tissue. It contains approximately 1 million particles of poliomyelitis strains 1, 2 or 3 or a combination of all three strains.

In the United States, mumps has been on the decline since the introduction of the mumps vaccine in 1967 and again in 1977 when it was recommended for routine use. In 1989 the two-dose MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine schedule was recommended for measles control and mumps cases continued to drop. By 2001, there were less than 300 cases annually, a 99% decline in reported cases compared to 1968 (CDC, 2006d).

The Biken Company reported that the mumps vaccine in the standard MMR vaccine was a mixture of two Urabe Am9 mumps vaccine bulks, one identical to that contained in the Biken MMR vaccine and the other produced by a different manufacturing process. 

In 1995, a somewhat different note was sounded from France, where all mumps vaccines produced and marketed at that time contained the Urabe vaccine strain. Transmission of Urabe mumps vaccine strain between siblings has been reported (44). A girl developed parotitis after immunization with Urabe mumps strain 19 days later her older sister developed mumps. The strain isolated showed molecular biological characteristics typical for the Urabe strain.
