Helical symmetry was thought at one time to exist only in plant viruses. It is now known, however, to occur in a number of animal virus particles. The influenza and mumps viruses, for example, which were first seen in early electron micrographs as roughly spherical particles, have now been observed as enveloped particles within the envelope, the capsids themselves are helically symmetrical and appear similar to the rods of TMV, except that they are more flexible and are wound like coils of rope in the centre of the particle.

The delayed type hypersensitivity response (DTH) is an assay frequently used to assess the T cell response to commonly encountered microbial antigens. It involves intradermal injection of antigens to which the majority of individuals are immune (known as recall antigens) such as vaccinia, herpes simplex, and mumps viruses, Candida, and tetanus toxoid. In normal individuals, after 24-48 hours, an inflammatory filtrate results in local edema and induration, the diameter of which can be measured. A negative reaction to all the antigens (anergy) is usually reflected by decreased lymphocyte function as measured in vitro and is frequently seen in AIDS and ARC patients.

A natural SP OKU-40 was extracted from the marine microalga Dinoflag-ellata and was found to inhibit the replication of HIV, RSV, influenza A and B viruses, measles virus, and parainfluenza viruses type 2 (PIV-2). However, it did not inhibit the replication of mumps virus or PIV-3 [98]. The action of negatively charged polysaccharides is not merely one of nonspecific inhibition of the binding of an enveloped virus to receptors. In fact, OKU-40 did not inhibit the binding of HIV or influenza A virus to the cell membrane, but it did inhibit the fusion of the membranes of HIV-infected MOLT-4 cells to those of uninfected cells and the fusion of the influenza A virus envelope to uninfected MDCK cells [99].

The Biken Company reported that the mumps vaccine in the standard MMR vaccine was a mixture of two Urabe Am9 mumps vaccine bulks, one identical to that contained in the Biken MMR vaccine and the other produced by a different manufacturing process.

Mumps virus infects the parotid glands to cause swelling and a general viraemia. Complications include pancreatitis, meningitis and orchitis, the latter occasionally leading to male sterility. Infections can also cause permanent unilateral deafness at any age. In the absence of vaccination, infection occurs in >90 % of individuals by age 15 years.
