Replacement of an algal species with another must occur repeatedly in the phylogeny of a family such as the Stictaceae. Otherwise it is difficult to understand the occurrence of morphologically and chemically identical species which can only be distinguished by type of alga (see Yoshimura, 1971, for Lobar id).
