Coal may become more imported both as an energy source and as the source of organic chemicals in this century (Demirbas and Giillu, 1998). Coal science is an applied disciphne, using methods of science and engineering for research into genesis, characterization, conversion and utilization of coal and related solid fuels (Demirbas, 1999). 

This chapter provides some brief biographical information about Peter Given and his impact on the field of coal science. His contributions to the profession are measured and explained by comparing some of the papers presented at the 1964 American Conference on C al Science, which he organized, and the 1989 symposium held in his memory and organized by the Division of Fuel Chemistry as part of the 198th national meeting of the American Qiemical Society.
