Scope of Mechanical Engineering

The selection of material to resist deterioration in seivdce is outside the scope of the B31.3 code (see Sec. 23). Experience has, however, resulted in the following material considerations extracted from the code with the permission of the pubhsher, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, NewY ork. [Pg.946]

A chemical reactor is a vessel manufactured from metal, often stainless steel or high resistant alloys. A minimum wall thickness is required to resist to different toads, and mainly to internal pressure. Accurate mechanical calculation of process equipment is a matter of mechanical engineering, and out of the scope of this book. Here we present only simple relations that permit the evaluation of weight and cost of vessels in a preliminary economic analysis. More information about mechanical design can be found in Coulson Richardson (1993). [Pg.611]

A number of authorities have issued standards for boiler and feed-water. These include boiler manufacturers, water treatment firms and the British Standards Institution, as well as other interested bodies. The authorities noted here to illustrate the scope for similarities and differences in this field are as follows Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) Electric Power Research Institute (EPRl), as discussed by Smock, British Standards Institution (BSI) Treatment of Water for Land Boilers (BS 2486 1978), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), as discussed by Simon and Fynsk and the (VGB) Guidelines as noted by Smock and by Bolton and Ray All of these authorities emphasise that their standards are essentially guidelines and advise that in any given case the views of the boiler manufacturer should be sought and local circumstances taken into account. [Pg.879]

A review of research on the application of quantum mechanics to heterogeneous reactions is outside the scope of this article. Thus, the readers are referred to sources such as Surface Science, Vol. 156, which contains the proceedings of the Third International Meeting on Small Particles and Inorganic Clusters, Berlin, West Germany, July 9-13, 1984, and Supercomputer Research in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, ACS Symposium Series No. 353, 1987. [Pg.175]
