John Alpheus Putnam obtained from University of California, Berkeley CA, the BS degree in 1930, the MS degree in 1934, and the PhD degree in 1943, all in mechanical engineering. He worked after his MS degree as research engineer at Kettleman Hills CA for the Standard Oil Company until 1939, applying in the volumetric and phase behaviour of petroleum hydrocarbons to reservoir analysis.
