The Responsible Care program will likely continue to evolve. ICCA supports the goal adopted by the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 that by 2020 chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on human health and the environment [170]. How Responsible Care will contribute to that goal, and how progress will be measured and reported, remain to be seen.

In this chapter many of the basic elements of condensed phase chemical reactions have been outlined. Clearly, the material presented here represents just an overview of the most important features of the problem. There is an extensive literature on all of the issues described herein and, more importantly, there is still much work to be done before a complete understanding of the effects of condensed phase enviromnents on chemical reactions can be achieved. The theorist and experimentalist alike can therefore look forward to many more years of exciting and challenging research in this important area of physical chemistry.

Even within the small numbers of studies conducted to date, we are already seeing potentially dramatic effects. Free radical polymerization proceeds at a much faster rate and there is already evidence that both the rate of propagation and the rate of termination are effected. Whole polymerization types - such as ring-opening polymerization to esters and amides, and condensation polymerization of any type (polyamides, polyesters, for example) - have yet to be attempted in ionic liquids. This field is in its infancy and we look forward to the coming years with great anticipation. 

Perhaps you are a health science major, looking forward to a career in medicine or pharmacy. If so, you will want to become familiar with the properties of aqueous solutions (Chapters 4,10,14, and 16), which include blood and other body fluids. Chemists today are involved in the synthesis of a variety of life-saving products. These range from drugs used in chemotherapy (Chapter 15) to new antibiotics used against resistant microorganisms. 

As space exploration begins, we can look forward to a vast multiplication of our present knowledge of the planets. Conceivably we shall be analyzing samples of the moon within this decade. Here, as in the thickness gaging of steel (3.2) and in the blending of tetraethyllead fluid and gasoline (3.15), one may look forward to automation. In the present instance, if the tin plating is too thick or too thin, an error signal from the x-ray detector could be fed back into the system to produce an automatic adjustment, perhaps by changing the plating current. 

On the basis of this past work and ongoing experiments, we feel that the liquid-phase methanation process promises to become an economic, reliable, and versatile means of converting synthesis gas mixtures to high Btu gas. The application of the quantum mechanics to the interaction of more complicated atoms, and to the non-polar chemical bond in general, is now being made (45). A discussion of this work can not be given here it is, however, worthy of mention that qualitative conclusions have been drawn which are completely equivalent to G. N. Lewis s theory of the shared electron pair. The further results which have so far been obtained are promising and we may look forward with some confidence to the future explanation of chemical valence in general in terms of the Pauli exclusion principle and the Heisenberg-Dirac resonance phenomenon. 

We are honored to assemble this volume, as Yngve Ohm s influence and example have informed, inspired, and guided each of us. From this further analysis, the actual amount of waste (and its nature) per kilogram of product will become evident. At this stage it is also important to look forward and assess options for recycling or reusing the waste on site for example if a solvent can be efficiently recovered then this should be taken into account in calculating the E-factor. As a result, the instriment does not read above a level of approximately 2 mg/100 ml. Therefore, it is necessary to dilute the serum from newborns in order to be read in this instrument. However, if one standardizes by making a 1 to 5 dilution of all newborn serum, one can use this method for screening purposes. One looks forward to the further development of this instrument so that readings can be made over a wide range. 

Despite the success in modeling catalysts with single crystals and well defined surfaces, there is a clear need to develop models with higher levels of complexity to address the catalytically important issues specifically related to mixed oxide surfaces. The characterization and design of oxide surfaces have not proven to be easy tasks, but recent progress in identification of the key issues in catalytic phenomena on oxide surfaces by in-situ characterization techniques on an atomic and molecular scale brings us to look forward to vintage years in the field. 

While apparent from the amount of work that can be reported, it is obvious that we really do not have a comprehensive view of the dynamics of polar solvation at liquid interfaces. Especially lacking are studies probing the inertial response to the dynamics of polar solvation occurring at interfaces. There is enormous room for growth in the entire field as there exist such an extensive range of interfaces that are important in chemistry, biology, and physics. We can look forward to more detailed studies on the vast array of available systems.
