At this time, forward-looking companies understood that the ability of a refiner to control the highest octane fuels could corner critical and specialized niche automotive and aviation fuel markets. Refiners looked on catalytic cracking as a way to more finely tune their products for these market segments. 

This narrative was first presented at Don Boyd s third annual Central Indiana Computational Chemistry Christmas Luncheon (CICCCL-3) on December 18,1997. Although it is specihc for Eli Lilly and Company, the progress and problems that transpired there were probably not too different from developments at other large, forward-looking, research-based pharmaceutical companies.

The Editor would welcome feedback from readers. This might merely take the form of criticism. It might also contain suggestions of developing areas of chemistry that merit a forward-looking exposition or of the need for a new appraisal of better established topics that have escaped the notice of the Editor and his distinguished Advisory Board.
