An Extensive Literature

Studies by the World Health Organization have shown that patients diagnosed by conventional standards with schizophrenia recover much more frequently and rapidly in Third World countries, where they can benefit from the support of extended family and where they are less likely to receive neuroleptic drugs (de Girolamo, 1996). Conversely, they recover more poorly in Western countries, where they have weaker family support systems and are exposed to toxic psychiatric drugs. [Pg.428]

Antonuccio et al. (2002) reviewed the literature confirming the ineffectiveness of antidepressants and the literature on the effectiveness of psychotherapy in treating depression and concluded that psychotherapy is safer and more effective. Most of the individuals were treated in outpatient settings. [Pg.428]

Not surprising, lifestyle changes can help more than psychiatric drugs, with no adverse effects on the brain and mind. A number of studies have also described the antidepressant effects of exercise (Babyak et al., 2000 Blumenthal et al., 1999). [Pg.428]

In this chapter many of the basic elements of condensed phase chemical reactions have been outlined. Clearly, the material presented here represents just an overview of the most important features of the problem. There is an extensive literature on all of the issues described herein and, more importantly, there is still much work to be done before a complete understanding of the effects of condensed phase enviromnents on chemical reactions can be achieved. The theorist and experimentalist alike can therefore look forward to many more years of exciting and challenging research in this important area of physical chemistry. [Pg.895]

The tenn represents an externally applied potential field or the effects of the container walls it is usually dropped for fiilly periodic simulations of bulk systems. Also, it is usual to neglect v - and higher tenns (which m reality might be of order 10% of the total energy in condensed phases) and concentrate on For brevity henceforth we will just call this v(r). There is an extensive literature on the way these potentials are detennined experimentally, or modelled... [Pg.2243]

Carbon blacks are typical fillers for reinforcing rubber. An extensive literature has been devoted to the manufacture, structure, and characterization of carbon blacks, as well to their effects as fillers in polymers. Some specific and more detailed information can be found in Refs. [38,48]. [Pg.636]

Owing to the use of lupin seeds for feeding animals, much attention has been given to the selection of species free from the more toxic alkaloids of the group, particularly sparteine, to methods of removing alkaloids from the seeds, a subjeet on which there is an extensive literature and to methods of estimating alkaloids in lupins on which a critical review has been published by Brahm and Andresen. ... [Pg.119]

In the last 10 years many three-membered rings with two hetero atoms have been synthesized. Their formation occurs surprisingly smoothly with an ease comparable to that of the three-membered rings with one hetero atom. The oxaziranes (I), diaziridines (2), and diazirincs (3) have become, in a very short time, classes of compounds with an extensive literature. [Pg.85]

The corrosion fatigue failure of total joint prostheses has been widely studied. It can be concluded from an extensive literature survey carried... [Pg.476]

We discuss extensively the kinetic system we used and the basis for selecting this system. During our development work, we referred frequently to the literature and to the kinetics reported by previous investigators. An extensive literature search was made, and a comprehensive bibliography is presented. [Pg.57]

Most surface area measurements are based on the interpretation of the low temperature equilibrium adsorption of nitrogen or of krypton on the solid using the BET theory [33,269,276—278]. There is an extensive literature devoted to area determinations from gas adsorption data. Estimates of surfaces may also be obtained from electron micrographs, X-ray diffraction line broadening [279] and changes in the catalytic activity of the solid phase [ 280]. [Pg.28]

There is an extensive literature relating to the role of surface intermediates in the heterogeneous catalytic decomposition of formic acid on metals and oxides (see Refs. 36, 522,1030,1042—1045). [Pg.216]

There is an extensive literature devoted to the preparation and structure determination of coordination compounds. Thermal analysis (Chap. 2, Sect. 4) has been widely and successfully applied in determinations [1113, 1114] of the stoichiometry and thermochemistry of the rate processes which contribute to the decompositions of these compounds. These stages may overlap and may be reversible, making non-isothermal kinetic data of dubious value (Chap. 3, Sect. 6). There is, however, a comparatively small number of detailed isothermal kinetic investigations, together with supporting microscopic and other studies, of the decomposition of coordination compounds which yields valuable mechanistic information. [Pg.231]

There is an extensive literature on the use of 2,1,3-benzoxadiazole 1-oxide [often called benzofuroxanie) (BFO) (462)] as a substrate for the primary synthesis of quinoxaline 1,4-dioxides and occasionally quinoxaline mono-A -oxides or even simple quinoxalines. Very few substituted derivatives of the parent substrate (462) have been employed in recent years. The general mechanism clearly involves a fission (usually amine-catalyzed) of the oxadiazole ring followed by reaction with an ancillary synthon. The following examples are divided according to the type of synthon employed. [Pg.62]

Rapid and quicker methods have an extensive literature and mainly review-type publications are given at the end of the chapter. [Pg.25]

Research in psychopharmacology has shown that ethnicity must be considered in psychiatry as well (Lawson, 1986 Pi 8c Simpson, 2005). Early clinical trials with antipsychotic and antidepressant medications showed that ethnic minorities may respond when given the same doses as Caucasians, and may have more side effects (Lawson, 1986 Lawson, 1990). However, dosing cannot be used as a measure of appropriate pharmacotherapy because an extensive literature has shown that African Americans often receive higher doses of antipsychotics despite evidence of more side effects. [Pg.112]

A partial conclusion can be drawn at this stage of presentation. A larger number of works have been published in literature and the present model can explain the majority of data. An extensive literature review has been already done by Gorce et al. and will not be considered again in this chapter [5],... [Pg.165]

In a thorough work with an extensive literature survey, crystal structures, vibrational and 31P NMR spectra of several phosphine complexes of mercury(II) halides HgX2 are presented.235 In the dibenzophosphole complex (dbp)2HgBr2, Hg adopts a distorted tetrahedral coordination (rav(Hg—P) 250.2, rav(Hg—Br) 261.1pm) (cf. the related Cd complex in the previous paragraph), with slightly shorter Hg—P and Hg—Br bonds, respectively, than in the comparable... [Pg.1277]

Data Summary. There is an extensive literature dealing with hydrocarbon pyrolysis reactions. The articles by Schutt (2) and Fair and... [Pg.541]

There is an extensive literature on concentration, separation, and fractionation methods. References [1-5] give general reviews. [Pg.363]

It is interesting to compare the Debye-Hiickel and virial methods, since each has its own advantages and limitations. The Debye-Hiickel equations are simple to apply and readily extensible to include new species in solution, since they require few coefficients specific to either species or solution. The method can be applied as well over the range of temperatures most important to an aqueous geochemist. There is an extensive literature on ion association reactions, so there are few limits to the complexity of the solutions that can be modeled. [Pg.127]

An extensive literature search revealed no published data on famphur toxicity to aquatic animals. Unpublished studies of acute lethality were, however, conducted with the bluegill (Lepomis mac-rochirus) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). In those studies, the range in LC50 values at 96 h was 18 to 21 mg/L in bluegills and 4.9 to 5.3 mg/L in rainbow trout. The no-observable-effect concentration at 96 h ranged from 14 to 18 mg/1 in bluegills and was 2.1 mg/L in rainbow trout (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, OPPTS/OPP/EFED/EEB, personal communication, 30 June 1993). [Pg.1075]

An extensive literature deals with catalysis by molybdenum compounds (6-15), many of which are isoelectronic with the rhenium analogs of similar but not identical composition. Molybdenum chemistry will not be covered here except by way of comparison. The major oxidation... [Pg.163]
