This article complements the three lectures on Interferometry at the CNRS-/NATO/EC Summer school Optics in Astrophysics in Carggse, Corse, in September 2002, The original lectures make extensive use of the features of PowerPoint, including animated text and figures. Therefore the original PowerPoint files, as well as PDF versions thereof, are available for download from the web sites of the Summer school and of the author. Several animations were prepared using MathCAD to produce animations in avi format, each of which is several MB in size. These animations are separately available for download at the same web sites.

Contains a valuable chapter on General relativity by P. Tourrenc (contains a precise description of the various coordinates systems and their use, OBLIGATORY), a chapter by S. Bonazzola and E. Some notes (21) that I prepared for a summer school in Debrecen and Balatonszeplak in 1967 were seeds for our intense efforts to provide a textbook (22) where Green functions should be introduced as the preferred vehicle for the interpretation, calculation, and development of molecular theory. Taking this into account I look forward to a productive NATO Summer School with new motivation to shift to energy conservation techniques of the new millennium in meeting Kyoto Targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in order to combat climate change. 

Eminent experts who have worked in a number of Annexes of IEA ECES IA were among the lecturers of this Advanced Study Institute. 24 lecturers from Canada, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and USA have all enthusiastically contributed to the scientific programme. In Ceme, Turkey, 65 students from 17 countries participated in this 2-week summer school. This book contains the manuscripts prepared based on the lectures given during the summer school. I am most grateful to the contributors. 

To prepare for teaching, Carothers was ordered to enroll at his own expense in summer school at the University of Chicago. The experience was an eye-opener and contributed to Carothers disenchantment with Tarkio.
