Primary atomization, the formation of ligaments and drops by an atomizer, has already been a subject of study for over a century. The difficulty in experiments is that the numerous droplets reflect light, obscuring clear views of the atomization process. In addition, the high speed and small size of practical fuel injection means that the experimental images are often not clear. Dense sprays and non-spherical drops also make quantitative data difficult to obtain with laser-based diagnostics. [Pg.40]

An alternative approach is to use direct numerical simulation (DNS). Numerical results can offer considerable detail and allow access to the complete fluid flow. For example, how big is the role of disturbances generated in the atomizer Does the Rayleigh-Taylor instability matter in primary atomization Do ijewly formed droplets immediately collide with ligaments and previously formed droplets How useful are small-perturbation analyses for primary atomization The disadvantage is that DNS is capable of simulating only a small part of the spray. [Pg.40]

In contrast to traditional DNS, the simulation of two phases requires very advanced numerical techniques for handling the deforming free surface. With large density differences, stability can be a problem [9]. Also, interface tracking codes require several hundred percent more central processing unit (CPU) time than single-phase codes, making such simulations expensive. [Pg.41]

There have been only a few major attempts to apply interface tracking to primary atomization [9, 10]. However, both of these codes treated all variables, excepting density, as continuous across the interface, which could have implications for their accuracy. For example, the discontinuity in viscosity causes the first derivative of velocity to change abruptly at an interface. [Pg.41]

Other interface tracking schemes have been applied to single drops but have limitations that currently prevent them from being applied to sprays. Helenbrook has developed a very accurate spectral method, but this code is currently limited to two-dimensional, axisymmetric droplet simulations [11]. Cristini et al. have a three-dimensional multiphase flow code that is bcised on the boundary element method (BEM) [12]. However, the BEM will not predict separated flows or capture vorticity effects. [Pg.41]

The piezoelectric polymer investigations give new physical insight into the nature of the physical process in this class of ferroelectric polymers. The strong nonlinearities in polarization with stress are apparently more a representation of nonlinear compressibility than nonlinear electrical effects. Piezoelectric polarization appears to be linear with stress to volume compressions of tens of percent. The combination of past work on PVDF and future work on copolymers, that have quite different physical features promises to provide an unusually detailed study of such polymers under very large compression. [Pg.137]

On the basis of this past work and ongoing experiments, we feel that the liquid-phase methanation process promises to become an economic, reliable, and versatile means of converting synthesis gas mixtures to high Btu gas. Chem Systems believes that this technology is a key step in the transformation of fossil feeds into pipeline gas, and we look forward to its successful application in commercial coal gasification plants. [Pg.168]

I hope that the present juxtaposition of past work will act as an encouraging reminder to younger readers that making new science requires both bold, but well-founded, experiments and imaginative, but rigorous, thought. [Pg.12]

Two reports based on rather gross measuring techniques found a close correlation between ozone uptake and transpiration. These studies indicated that stomatal control is the prime factor in controlling pollutant uptake and that cuticular sorption is negligible in relation to stomatal absorption. These findings are generally supported by past work that indicates that stomata are the prime sites of pollutant entry... [Pg.531]

Several parameters have been seen to influence the crystallization of ice crystals in subcooled aqueous solutions. The primary factor is the extent of subcooling of the solution. Other factors include the agitation rate, the types and levels of solutes in solution. Huige (6) has summarized past work on conditions under which dusk-shaped and spherical crystals can be found in suspension crystallizers. The effects of heat and mass transfer phenomena on the morphology of an ice crystal growing in a suspension have not been fully understood. [Pg.317]

The heteropentalenes (94) are reduced electrochemically to anion radicals (94 ). The process is reversible as demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry using a carbon paste working electrode <85JCS(P2)1797>. The electrochemical half-peak reduction potential in aqueous methanol j,/2 shows that ring units X = S, SO, SO2 ( — j,/2 = 437 423 383 mV) increase the ability of (94) (R = = H)... [Pg.422]

Lu et al. have described a single sweep voltammetric method for the determination of chlorpromazine at carbon paste electrodes [176]. Powdered tablet was dissolved in and diluted to 100 mL with water, whereupon a 10 mL portion of the solution was mixed with 10 mL of acetate buffer solution (pH 5.3). This solution was then diluted to 100 mL. The solution was analyzed using an electrolytic cell equipped with a carbon paste working electrode, a reference saturated calomel electrode, and a platimun counter-electrode. The voltammogram was recorded by single sweep scanning from 0 to 1 V, with a scanning rate of 10 mV/sec. [Pg.132]

Past work in computer-generated prose includes the book The Policeman s Beard Is Half Constructed—the. first book ever written entirely by a computer. The program that generated the book was called RACTER, written by William Chamberlain and Thomas Etter. Ray Kurzweil, in The Age of Thinking Machines, notes that RACTER s prose... [Pg.64]

The overall job-search process involves taking a close look at yourself, your education, skills, past work experience, overall qualifications, and marketability. You will need to determine what types of jobs or positions you re qualified to fill. Next, through research, reading... [Pg.1]

For now, don t worry about specific wording, resume format, or anything else. Simply focus on what information you believe needs to be conveyed within your resume. The following questions will help you summarize your skills, educational background, professional accomplishments, past work experience, career objectives, and other information you need to tell a potential employer. [Pg.20]

Instead of using long paragraphs to describe past work experience, consider using a bulleted list. Most employers spend... [Pg.175]

AS YOU WRITE your resume, it s critical that you properly communicate your past work experience in a way that readers easily understand. Never assume that the person reading your resume will totally comprehend your job responsibilities, accomplishments, and the skills needed to achieve your position s requirements, simply because you listed an impressive job title on your resume. Likewise, make sure the job titles you list under the employment section of your resume aren t too generic or so specific that they don t apply to another company s needs. [Pg.213]

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make when creating their resume (aside from not proofreading the document and allowing spelling or grammatical mistakes to go unnoticed) is that they don t properly communicate their past employment history in terms the resume s reader will quickly and easily understand. Too many job seekers undersell their abilities or qualifications simply because they don t successfully communicate past work experience or describe previous job titles and responsibilities in an appropriate manner. [Pg.246]

Methodological studies inevitably lead to some revision and even rejection of past work. Archaeologists who were too readily persuaded to accept scientific results as absolute facts may be a little dismayed to find that some of these facts are now being questioned. They must remember that no discipline has a corner on infallability and that knowledge, in the sciences as well as in the humanities, advances slowly by a kind of iterative process in which error is gradually reduced to reach an approximation of truth. Uninhibited self-criticism is the surest indication that archaeometry is coming of age. [Pg.5]

Powdered metal flames have been extensively studied at Temple University. Conway and Grosse (20G) report the development of a torch using powdered metal as a fuel. A history of past work in this field is included. For successful results powders less than 200-mesh must be used. Branstetter, Lord, and Gerstein (16G) have used metal fuels, both powders and wire, in a 2-inch-diameter ram-jet-type combustor. [Pg.143]

The former factor explains why an article on dynamic phenomena is included in this volume the latter explains why the article is as much a survey of topics for further research as it is a review of past work. Prospects of exciting new research developments in this field seem bright. [Pg.106]

Another chemical approach to improve our microscopic understanding of optical nonlinearities is a study of nonlinear optical behavior of sequentially built and systematically derivatized structures. Most past work for third-order nonlinearities have focused on conjugated polymers. This ad hoc approach is not helpful in identifying functionalities necessary to enhance optical nonlinearities. A systematic study and correlation of Y values of systematically varied structure is an important approach for material development. [Pg.69]

Here we skim over the field of semiempirical VB theory of the Jt-systems of benzenoids. Primary focus is on a systematic derivational development of a hierarchical sequence of VB models. Different VB-based models are addressed in different sections (2, 3,5, 6) here, and the overall development is summarized in the diagram at the conclusion of Sect. 7. Section 4 serves as an interlude on quantum chemical computational methods, with emphasis on the VB basis and its relationship to chemical structure — this being crucial for the following sections. Along the way we indicate some of the history and general characteristics of the models. The unifying view which emerges not only incorporates many aspects of past work but reveals avenues for future research. [Pg.59]

Demographics factors. These factors focus on a number of characteristics, including past work experience (experience in independent settings supports entrepreneurial tendencies), entrepreneurial parents (more likely to be entrepreneurial when parents have been as well), and age (most businesses are launched between the ages of 25 and 40). [Pg.562]

Brief Review of Past Work on Chemical Modification of Wood... [Pg.304]

About 2 years after we made the movie, I had occasion to show this to Douglas Shearer, Technical Director of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, then one of the major movie studios. I was surprised to learn that MGM was interested in novel imaging materials that could be employed in films for drive-in movie theaters, where the intense heat of the projection apparatus adversely affected the silver-based films. He thought my film was a nice piece of work and said MGM could have made a great film about our materials using their special-effects department. But, then, he was the owner of 20 Oscars for his past work. [Pg.180]
