Local issues

The sample monthly report presented on the next three pages is made up of different reporting formats an actual report would probably use a more consistent presentation format. The report is a monthly corporate level report it assumes the reader is familiar with the format and provides little explanation or interpretation. Each division or facility would have its own report which would cover local issues in more detail. 

In this chapter, we examine the environmental chemistry associated with both global and local issues. One goal of this chapter is to provide a balanced perspective on the subject. This in turn should help the reader use chemistry to make informed decisions about environmental issues. An axiom of the environmental movement is to think globally and act locally. While both global and local issues will be treated separately, the nature of having an enviromnen-tal perspective means knowing that local decisions made by many individuals cumulatively have global consequences. 

Then there is the fourth point, the practical issue of timing relevant to other courses and other participants, such as engineers and the correlation of lectures with laboratory. This is a local issue, of course, but it might have a serious impact on the development of courses locally. It seems to me, though, that a chemistry department should establish its own priorities and approach initially, and bend only as others arguments prove compelling. 

General concern for internationally recognized priority chemicals specialized national issues based on identifying die significance of international priority substances (e.g., dioxins) local issues relating to either toxic incidents or new chemical registration applications... 

Field trips to relevant assets of nature and management installations are a must. Mini research projects on worldwide problems or local issues are most welcome. Acquaintance with monitoring networks and data banks is an intrinsic part of such a graduate water course.

It is quite likely that in every school district there are issues that arouse greater interest and passion than do these. Following the format of the topics in this book, however, a resourceful teacher can collect the facts of a local issue and then present the issue to the students to discuss, investigate, and work toward a resolution. 

ADAS seeks to provide integrating modeling. This is based on a number of strategic objectives which have become points of principle. These are to separate local atomic tasks from non-local issues, to provide derived atomic data close-linked to experimental spectroscopic data reduction, to provide consistent source function inputs to theoretical plasma modeling and to provide central management of atomic data.

The Act did not envision the implementation of a robust regulatory framework at the federal level. The Act was designed to enable the federal government, under the auspices of the EPA, to provide the states with sufficient assistance so that the states could tackle what was perceived to be a local issue in need of local solutions. The American Psychiatric Association has a similar but smaller group of volunteers in its Committee on the Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster. The committee sponsors an introductory course on psychiatric aspects of disasters and a disaster workshop at the Annual Meeting and has developed written and audiovisual materials and distributed them to each of the Association s 77 district branches. VOCs, ozone and other pollutants can be transported by wind to regions remote from the site of emission. Tropospheric ozone formation is therefore a regional rather than a local issue. 

Environmental issues of today are conveniently discussed within two broad classes global issues and regional or local issues. Table 1.2 summarizes the various issues in each category that impact the polymer industry. Independent failures of devices are analyzed to identify roots, and it is possible to reduce reoccurrence of failure.
