Practical Issues

A number of ancillary issues must also be addressed in addition to those dealt with in the compound selection procedure itself. One of these is compound attrition each year, about 1% of the compounds in a given collection are, for a variety of reasons, no longer available. Some of these maybe rare or unusual compounds that are difficult to replace. If and how these are replaced is a subject for discussion that will not, however, be dealt [Pg.320]

Another practical limitation in complex applications lies in the fact that, if temperature is used as a control parameter, one needs to worry about the integrity of a system that is heated too much (e.g., water-membrane systems or a protein heated above its denaturation temperature). When issues such as those mentioned above are addressed, parallel tempering can be turned into a powerful and effective means of enhanced conformational sampling for free energies over a range of temperatures for various systems. [Pg.290]

For an excellent overview of several other applications of parallel tempering, as well as for details on the pertinent questions to be addressed in practical implementations, the reader is referred to a recent review by Earl and Deem [59]. [Pg.290]

As for most behavioral therapies, the success of SRT is entirely dependent on the patient s compliance with the prescribed sleep window (7,22). Despite the apparent simplicity of this clinical procedure, therapist guidance is often essential to optimize compliance with the clinical recommendations (16). The first hurdle is making it clear to the patient what is expected and why. Indeed, the idea of curtailing even further the sleep of someone who presents with insomnia is somewhat paradoxical. For many patients, it is counterintuitive when sleep quality is unsatisfactory—from their vantage point, time in bed should be increased to obtain more satisfactory sleep. Thus, it is essential to explain the basic principles of sleep homeostasis and the rationale behind SRT, which should help patients better understand why time in bed should be restricted (27). The addition of sleep education is also useful for elderly individuals to explain the nature and extent of sleep changes associated with aging (16,18,22,25). [Pg.480]

Another factor that may hinder compliance is the sleep loss experienced early in treatment. SRT initially produces a mild sleep deprivation, with associated daytime fatigue and drowsiness experienced in midaftemoon and evening hours. Sometimes, patients worry that they will not be able to tolerate these effects (5,30). Education, reassurance, and support are important to alleviate fears, increase treatment compliance, and help reduce dropouts. Warning patients about this potential short-term effect is important, especially when full alertness at work or for other tasks is a concern (30). [Pg.481]

SRT has become a standard therapeutic approach, either alone or in combination with other methods, for the management of insomnia. Although it was formally described only 15 years ago, sleep restriction has probably been used as a naturalistic countermeasure to insomnia for much longer. The evidence available, although not very extensive, indicates that SRT is an effective intervention for [Pg.481]

The adequate resourcing of implementation and vaiidation is key to the success of project timescaies. Often, staff are put onto project teams in addition to carrying out their normai roles within a business. On a project of this complexity, it is unlikely that they will be able to fulfill both roles adequately. [Pg.249]

It is more than likely that during the course of an ERP project, there will be changes from the original plan. Bearing in mind that the plan is considered to be the evidence of the planned activities and will be used to compare to the evidence of activities carried out, it is obvious to see that any changes to the plan must be documented. If a regulator took the plan and compared it to the resulting report, he or she should have a full overview of the project. [Pg.249]

Overview and summary documents are invaluable and continue to be an area of weakness, as many FDA 483s will verify. It is also important to have a consistent approach to the documentation and standard formats to make for easier reviewing. If information is easy to locate in a document, it will be looked upon more favorably than a complex, disorganized document that requires reading from cover to cover. [Pg.249]

The issue of change control can be responsible for the undoing of a long and complex validation project. It is little use having documented evidence of the validation effort if there is a lack of change control within the organization. Pharmaceutical companies will usually have strict controls over changes within the production environment, but weaknesses are often found when it [Pg.249]

Two key performance criteria for the quadmpole mass filter are the mass range and the mass resolution. Both can be calculated, assuming a perfect quadmpolar field. The maximum mass that can be transmitted is given by [47] [Pg.84]

Several practical issues of the scatterometer must be considered in the case of characterizing nominally smooth surfaces. The incident laser beam may be collimated, but more commonly it is brought to a focus at a distance defined by the arc in which the detector rotates. In addition, a deflection mirror or an optical fiber might be used to direct light to the detector element. These features permit measurements close to the specular and transmitted beams, and this is critical to folly characterize the scattered light. This is especially significant since the scattered light intensity... [Pg.718]

From these initial results we have seen that this approach has exciting practical issues. However, we have also found that it does not match the accuracy of a database structure search, and the latter will certainly continue to be the best approach for CSP prediction for separation of a particular structure. [Pg.122]

However, it should be noted that there are many practical issues that need to be considered when choosing mixing equipment and mixing patterns, in addition to those for maximizing yield, selectivity or conversion4. This is especially the case when dealing with multiphase reactions4. [Pg.294]

So far, in the discussion of production schedules, some practical issues have been neglected. Two practical issues can be encountered in production scheduling that can have a significant effect on the cycle time and the makespan9. [Pg.306]

At the same time, many practical issued associated with the use of optical oxygen sensors in food packs still remain. These have to be addressed to adapt the existing sensing materials and prototype systems for real-life applications, achieve the required sensor specifications, operational performance and safety. Considerable technological developments and effort in eliminating current problems and bottlenecks are required, to facilitate widespread use of the oxygen sensors by food and packaging industry. [Pg.503]

O Sullivan describes the fundamental theory, mechanistic aspects and practical issues associated with autocatalytic electroless metal deposition processes. Current approaches for gaining fundamental understanding of this complex process are described, along with results for copper, nickel and various alloys. Emphasis is placed on microelectronic applications that include formation of structures that are smaller than the diffusion layer thickness which influences structure formation. [Pg.356]

Therefore, a team, led by the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, was formed to study these practical issues (75), including the composition of the ceramic membrane, seals that would join the ceramic and metal materials, membrane performance, and development of a ceramic that would resist warping and fracturing at the high temperatures of the conversion process. [Pg.333]

Point (b) engineering. Whereas the spec was written to be easily understood and general to all implementations, my particular implementation is better. It works faster, uses fewer resources, and is better decoupled than some amateur attempt that slavishly follows the model in the spec. And for many programs, there would be practical issues such as persistence not dealt with in the spec. [Pg.261]
