In response to conditions in Leblanc towns the beginnings of an environmental movement developed. Among the social reformers and writers who protested were Charles Dickens, Disraeli, Mrs. Gaskell, and Emile Zola. [Pg.12]

Muller s invention launched both the synthetic pesticide industry that exploited his discovery and the environmental movement that opposed its use. Yet Paul Muller, a shy and determined nature lover, shared many of the same reservations about using DDT in the environment that Rachel Carson popularized in her best seller, Silent Spring, 14 years later. In the 1990s, three decades after DDT was banned in most of the industrialized world, international health workers revived the debate over its use. DDT is a cheap and effective insecticide against malaria, which kills nearly three million people annually, most of them young children and pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa. [Pg.148]

The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) was signed into law in late 1976. It was a bitterly-debated piece of legislation it arose at the height of the combined environmental concern and "cancerphobia" fears distinctive of that time. In order to understand how corporations have responded to TSCA, it is important to recall the situation at that time in the knowledge of carcinogenesis, in the environmental movement, in the political scene and, finally, in the corporations themselves. [Pg.121]

At the same time that this increased awareness to environmental carcinogens arose, the environmental movement was in full bloom. Since its established political goals were quite consistent with environmental carcinogen fears, the two were quite complementary. The history and development of the environmental movement are a fascinating and complex story in itself however, it is not an appropriate subject for this paper. Let it suffice to say that it was the combination of the cancer fears and the environmental movement that gave the political strength to pass TSCA into law. [Pg.123]

The oil crisis and the rising environmental movement of the early 1970s stopped the growth of these gas-guzzlers. To some the car ceased to express the good life and began to become a threat to the future of society. [Pg.156]

There are many areas of the chemical industry that are responsible for the release of pollutants into the enviromnent. Petroleum refining is one such industry that has seen inadvertent spillage of unrefined petroleum and petroleum products. Since the beginning of the environmental movement in the 1960s, the continuing question relates to the relative condition of the environment. [Pg.363]

The environmental movement is gaining acceptance and importance in many countries, particularly in those countries which have originated after the collapse of the former USSR.Many of these former Soviet Bloc countries have been left with a plethora of environmental problems arising from antiquated manufacturing processes. Built without pollution control equipment to problems arising from the careless disposal of chemicals and petroleum products, to disposal of excess military ordinance. [Pg.276]

Since the beginning of the environmental movement in the 1960s many people have asked repeatedly if we better off environmentally today and, if so, can we do even more than we have done In some respects we see a bad side. The chemical industry still has a large amount of toxic chemical emissions. Pollution control is getting more expensive. On the brighter side. [Pg.492]

Denis Hayes was born in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, on August 29,1944. He earned his A.B. degree from Stanford University in 1969. At the time that Neison made his first speech about Earth Day, Hayes was enroiied at Harvard University s Kennedy School of Government. Called upon by Nelson and other Earth Day organizers, however, Hayes left Harvard and became national coordinator of Earth Day. Because of his intimate involvement with the environmental movement, it was another 15 years before Hayes was able to complete his graduate studies. In 1985, he was also awarded his degree in environmental law from Stanford. Between 1983 and 1988, Hayes was adjunct professor of engineering at Stanford. [Pg.14]

Historians sometimes point to Earth Day 1970 as the beginning of the modern environmental movement. And in some important ways, they are correct. But many people were worried about the dangers posed by polluted air decades before that event. One such individual was the French-born American chemist Eugene Houdry. Houdry spent much of his professional career studying the nature of catalysis, the process by which the rate of a chemical reaction is changed by the addition of a nonreactive substance. [Pg.30]

Chemistry of the Environment begins with a historical review of pollution in human societies, describing the kinds of pollution problems with which people have had to deal and the way in which progress and pollution are inextricably interwoven. It then discusses the growth of the modern environmental movement, a movement characterized not only by an appreciation of the pollution problems facing modern society, but also by an understanding of the ways in which science in general and chemistry in particular can be used to solve those problems. [Pg.239]

In this chapter, we examine the environmental chemistry associated with both global and local issues. One goal of this chapter is to provide a balanced perspective on the subject. This in turn should help the reader use chemistry to make informed decisions about environmental issues. An axiom of the environmental movement is to think globally and act locally. While both global and local issues will be treated separately, the nature of having an enviromnen-tal perspective means knowing that local decisions made by many individuals cumulatively have global consequences. [Pg.262]

Around 1970, the environmental movement, dealing with both technical and political aspects of various environmental problems, sprang to life in the United States. American public opinion widely supported the movement, as did I. I taught courses on environmental problems, sponsored a student environmental action club, and became involved with a local group that went out in small boats to collect samples of steel mill discharges that I analyzed pro bono in my laboratory. [Pg.155]

Indeed, many scientists were closely allied with the founders of the Swedish environmental movement, and, along with the media, were instrumental in overcoming industry and government reluctance to adopt a more progressive and responsible attitude toward environmental protection. More basically, many respected scientists furnished the technical arguments that provided the foundations for improved protection of the environment. [Pg.238]
