To determine whether his Pacific samples were in fact representative of other oceans, Patterson and a Japanese colleague, Mitsunobu Tat-sumoto, began developing profiles of the lead in ocean layers in Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. Patterson hated ocean-going field trips he often became violently seasick, once so seriously that he had to be given oxygen. Because the ships were coated with leaded paints and compounds, sampling was tricky, too. Despite the problems, Patterson could see that, as in the Pacific, lead was concentrated in the upper portions of the Atlantic and Mediterranean. [Pg.175]

Because of hereditary gout, Dr. Rutherford was unable to take his botany students on field trips, and Sir R. Cbristison thought that that important duty ought to have been entrusted to the head gardener (31). [Pg.246]

Abcor "Gasbadge" organic vapor samplers and 3M 3500 Organic Vapor Monitors were purchased for use in this study. Abcor badges were loaded prior to each field trip in an office environment. Standard SKC charcoal tubes (100 mg collection section with 50 mg backup) were used, with DuPont P-200 pumps calibrated prior to each survey. [Pg.210]

Monitoring skin contamination at a coal gasifier. Recently the luminoscope was field tested at a coal gasifier facility. The purpose was to evaluate the performance of the prototype apparatus in a real-life workplace environment and to test the applicability of the instrumental concept in actual measurements. The skin contamination survey was carried out on six workers during two work-shifts. All measurements were carried out before and after washing. The portions of the workers bodies most likely to be directly exposed to coal and tar are those not protected by clothing, e.g., hands, arms, and faces. The measurements performed during this field trip were restricted only to arms and hands. [Pg.278]

We thank authorities of Abu Dhabi for their cooperation. We thank TOTAL CFP and TOTAL ABK for funding the field trip to Abu Dhabi and local support, and especially Dr. J.L. Oudin and Dr. R. Boichard for their interest in the subject, and advice. We also thank Professor B. H. Purser, Dr. J.C. Plaziat, and Dr. F. Baltzer of Orsay PARIS XI University, for their help in the field and considerable advice in the sedimentological studies. We aknowledge the help of Mrs Da Silva who carried on the GC-MS analysis, Mrs Fabre, and Mrs Bemon for their permanent help. This manuscript benefit from critical rewiew by Dr. H. L. ten Haven and Dr. D. W. Kirkland. [Pg.189]

I was on a field trip with Jim Clark, who was given the assignment to probe military contacts, when I called my secretary from the Denver airport. She said that I should call Dumont at home as soon as possible. When I did he said that he was sorry to tell me that the venture transfer was not as had been planned, and that only about half of the group would move to the Photo Products Department. Among the ones not going would be Dessauer, de Campi, Terss, and a few others who had been involved with the program for considerable time. I was shattered. Clark and I continued our trip to Beale AFB then to Ogden, Utah and finally to Drake AFB. I had no idea what would happen to me, and there was no one to talk to. [Pg.202]

Field trips to relevant assets of nature and management installations are a must. Mini research projects on worldwide problems or local issues are most welcome. Acquaintance with monitoring networks and data banks is an intrinsic part of such a graduate water course. [Pg.409]

Ayacucho is often necessary to finalize the paperwork. A duplicate set of herbarium specimens (usually including the unicates) must be deposited in a national or local herbarium often, a preliminary field trip report and/or a complete copy of field notes must be submitted after the expedition before the investigator is permitted to leave the country. [Pg.29]

Samantha was bawling. Her mother picked up the phone and told her daughter she would get her into the dentist s office immediately. Now the twins giggled and made faces at their big sister, but Samantha was too upset to mind them. She was now thinking about the field trip to the city that she would miss, all because of that stupid prize in the cereal box. [Pg.59]

Sample Collection, Pretreatment, and Analysis. Sediment-bound phosphorus in the Genesee River was studied by sampling bottom sediment, fine-material washed from bottom sediment, suspended sediment, and water column particulate material at six stations on the river. The sampling program was planned to be synoptic with complete chemical and hydrological parameters recorded at each site. One kilogram surficial sediment samples were collected in midstream at most sites during six field trips... [Pg.739]
