IPC serves as a powerful tool in many fields of life science. Nucleotides, nucleosides, and related compounds play important roles as structural units of nucleic acids, as co-enzymes in biochemical pathways, and as sources of chemical energy. Nucleotides, nucleosides, oligonucleotides, oligodeoxynucleotides, and nucleobases [42-54], DNA fragments [55], and DNA and RNA [56] were recently analyzed via IPC. The potential of ionic liquids as ionic modifiers for the analysis of nucleic compounds was recently demonstrated [57]. 

Since alterations in global DNA methylation are implicated in various pathobio-logical processes, a gradient IPC-ESI-MS/MS method with a volatile IPR was used to determine cytosine and 5-methylcytosine in DNA quantification relied on stable isotope dilution [58], Muscular dystrophies caused by various mutations in the dystrophin gene are amenable to easier prenatal diagnosis via a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)/IPC assay [59]. Some guidelines for the analysis of genomic DNA by IPC-ESl-MS can be found in Reference 60. 

Glycopeptides from a peptide mixture were analyzed via normal phase IPC, using inorganic monovalent ions as IPRs (added only to the sample and not to the mobile phase) to increase the hydrophobicity differences among peptides and glycopeptides [63]. IPC separation of peptides usually relies on the use of perlluorinated carboxylic acids [64] and small chaotropes [65,66], It can be performed also on a preparative scale for the purification of peptides from natural sources [67], Amino acids and related compounds [68-72] were similarly analyzed via IPC-MS. 

The pharmaceutical industry now faces compelling demands to improve the productivity of analyses and shorten drug discovery and development time cycles. An impressive number of drug candidates generated by modern synthesis and combinatorial libraries requires screening of many samples. Some examples of the usefulness of the IPC strategy will be discussed below. 

Separations of antibiotics were studied thoroughly. An IPC method using per-fluorocarboxylic acids as IPRs and pulsed electrochemical detection was devised to analyze gentamicin and performed better than the official method prescribed by the European Pharmacopoeia [78].

Am emerging sector, in which more research is needed, is that of life sciences and medicine. Recent results have, in fact, demonstrated that the application of natural zeolites as dietary supplements for animals, which was originally proposed on an empirical basis, has solid fundaments. MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) A bibliographic database administered by the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) that contains over 16 million references to journal articles in life sciences and medicine. Cover e extends to more than 5000 journals, with particular emphasis on US journals, and over half a million new records are added annually. The articles are indexed using the NLM s Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) thesaurus, which permits searching using both alphabetical and hierarchical approaches. MEDLINE is the major component of the NLM s PubMed database and can be accessed via Entrez.

The word radioactive sounds scciry, but science and medicine are stuffed with useful, friendly applications for radioisotopes. Many of these applications are centered on the predictable decay rates of various radioisotopes. These predictable rates are characterized by half-lives. The half-life of a radioisotope is simply the amount of time it tcikes for exactly half of a sample of that isotope to decay into daughter nuclei. For excimple, if a scientist knows that a sample originally contained 42 mg of a certain radioisotope and measures 21 mg of that isotope in the sample four days later, then the half-life of that radioisotope is four days. The half-lives of radioisotopes range from seconds to billions of yecirs.
