BERM-y recognized the need for interdisciplinary approaches for preparation of certain types of CRMs, partly in response to the measurement needs arising from governmental regulations dealing with food safety and environmental health criteria. 

In general terms, bioremediation involves multiphase but heterogeneous environments, such as soils in which the contaminant is present in association with the soil particles, dissolved in soil liquids, and in the soil atmosphere. Because of these complexities, successful bioremediation depends on an interdisciplinary approach involving microbiology, biochemistry, and engineering. 

The study of fine particles in pharmaceutical applications involves a number of different techniques. Micromeritic investigations involve surface areas, particle sizes and their distributions, the nature of solid surfaces, and particle shapes [4]. Scientists working in this field realize that a number of techniques are necessary to fully investigate a system and that an interdisciplinary approach is essential. This ability to correlate data from different techniques allows a more thorough understanding of the system, process, or problem being investigated.

During this time the first ACS Interaction Series - "Polymer Science and Technology - An Interdisciplinary Approach" - under the direction of Eli Pearce, Shalaby Shalaby and Garth Wilkes was under preparation. 

The applicability of using these interdisciplinary approaches, which include incorporation of various physical and chemical properties of the pollutants, QSARs/QSPRs and multicomponent joint action modeling are discussed and evaluated using a group of toxic and carcinogenic pollutants, i. e., polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). 

This section represents different case studies to explain how physical and chemical properties, QSAR and QSPR approaches, and multicomponent toxic effect models can be used to predict the mobility and bioavailability of organic pollutants at aqueous-solid phase interfaces. Such interdisciplinary approaches are applied here to two groups of toxic and carcinogenic compounds. 

In the preceding Sect. I have tried to illustrate the problems and developments of polymer stereochemistry from both the historical and logical points of view. A clear connection exists between synthetic and stmctural aspects For the solution of problems yet unsolved an interdisciplinary approach is required involving not only polymer chemistry but also spectroscopy, crystallography, statistical thermodynamics, solid state physics, and so on. 

Interdisciplinary approaches tend to be viewed differently by industry and academia. A high interest in interdisciplinary collaboration has been shown in industry. The participants believe that students may like working in teams for research purposes but dislike working in teams on graded classroom projects.
