From the standpoint of commercialization of fuel ceU technologies, there are two challenges initial cost and reHable life. The initial selling price of the 200-kW PAFC power plant from IFC was about 3500/kW. A competitive price is projected to be about 1500/kW orless for the utiHty and commercial on-site markets. For transportation appHcations, cost is also a critical issue. The fuel ceU must compete with conventional mass-produced propulsion systems. Furthermore, it is not clear if the manufacturing cost per kilowatt of small fuel ceU systems can be lower than the cost of much larger units. The life of a fuel ceU stack must be five years minimum for utiHty appHcations, and reHable, maintenance-free operation must be achieved over this time period. The projection for the PAFC stack is a five year life, but reHable operation has yet to be demonstrated for this period. [Pg.586]

Shale Oil. In the United States, shale oil, or oil derivable from oil shale, represents the largest potential source of Hquid hydrocarbons that can be readily processed to fuel Hquids similar to those derived from natural petroleum. Some countries produce Hquid fuels from oil shale. There is no such industry in the United States although more than 50 companies were producing oil from coal and shale in the United States in 1860 (152,153), and after the oil embargo of 1973 several companies reactivated shale-oil process development programs (154,155). Petroleum supply and price stabiHty has since severely curtailed shale oil development. In addition, complex environmental issues (156) further prohibit demonstration of commercial designs. [Pg.96]

Another market appHcation for naphthenic acid is the tire industry, where cobalt naphthenate is used as an adhesion promoter (see Adhesives Tire cords). Cobalt naphthenate improves the bonding of brass-plated steel cords to mbber, presumably by suppressing the de-zincification of brass (50). Its first reported use was in 1970 and the first patent for its use was issued in 1975 (51). About 900 t of cobalt naphthenate is used worldwide as an adhesion promoter, half of it in North America. The unit value fluctuates between 8.75—13.25 /kg because of the volatility of cobalt prices. Although it is the industry standard, the use of cobalt naphthenate is declining with the advent of more economical high metal-containing substitutes. [Pg.512]

By 1980, research and development shifted from relatively inexpensive surfactants such as petroleum sulfonates to more cosdy but more effective surfactants tailored to reservoir and cmde oil properties. Critical surfactant issues are performance in saline injection waters, adsorption on reservoir rock, partitioning into reservoir cmde oil, chemical stabiUty in the reservoir, interactions with the mobiUty control polymer, and production problems caused by resultant emulsions. Reservoir heterogeneity can also greatly reduce process effectiveness. The decline in oil prices in the early 1980s halted much of the work because of the relatively high cost of micellar processes. [Pg.194]

Nuclear Reactors. Nuclear power faciUties account for about 20% of the power generated in the United States. Although no new plants are plaimed in the United States, many other countries, particularly those that would otherwise rely heavily on imported fuel, continue to increase their nuclear plant generation capacity. Many industry observers predict that nuclear power may become more attractive in future years as the price of fossil fuels continues to rise and environmental regulations become more stringent. In addition, advanced passive-safety reactor designs may help allay concerns over potential safety issues. [Pg.17]

One more variation to the many methods proposed for sulfur extraction is the fire-flood method. It is a modem version of the Sickian method, by which a portion of the sulfur is burned to melt the remainder. It would be done in situ and is said to offer cost advantages, to work in almost any type of zone formation, and to produce better sweep efficiency than other systems. The recovery stream would be about 20 wt % sulfur as SO2 and 80 wt % elemental sulfur. The method was laboratory-tested in the late 1960s and patents were issued. However, it was not commercially exploited because sulfur prices dropped. [Pg.119]

Dividends can be paid either as cash or in the form of an additional issue of stock. A stock split is really a stock dividend, and both are used to reduce the price of stock when management considers that it is too high. A stock dividend is essentially a transfer of retained earnings to the common-stock account and makes the amount transferred unavailable for future dividends. A stock dividend may be used in place of a cash dividend when a company is short of cash. [Pg.842]

First, achieving lower raw material cost than at present is always an important economic factor. When the price for one material comes down relative to another, the point at which we trade-off between the two materials changes because cost is a factor in most designs. That statement is not meant to imply that engineers are not concerned about cost in some designs, but we must emphasize that some particular structures have functional requirements as the most important issue. Can they or can they not do the job Cost is not the primary issue in that case. We would naturally like to have a less-expensive Space Shuttle, but can we do the job that the Space Shuttle is now doing with a lower-cost structure We could use less-expensive materials, but would they be able to hold up, would they survive reentry, and would the astronauts be able to survive If the astronauts would not be able to survive, then clearly you would acknowledge that we must pay the added cost to get the job done, i.e., to ensure their safety. [Pg.463]
