Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control IPPC

Implements a new system of pollution control. Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC), which will eventually replace IPC and LAPC under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. [Pg.597]

It is important, however, to note that the terms used by policy makers (and in law) are not consistent. For example, under EU law binding air quality standards are termed limit values. However, the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive, which regulates industrial pollution, uses the term environmental quality standard and makes clear that the limit values are environmental quality standards. Both technical experts and lawyers, therefore, can use different terms in similar contexts. This variation not only can be found between media (e.g., air and water standards) but also can occur within a single medium. [Pg.7]

Commission Decision of 17 July 2000 on the implementation of a European pollutant emission register (EPER) according to Article 15 of Council Directive 96/61/EC concerning integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC), Official Journal of the European Union, EC, 2000, No.L.192. [Pg.320]

Effluent control as part of a Direct Toxicity Assessment (DTA) approach (UKWIR, 2001), based on the recommendations of a DTA Demonstration Programme completed in 2000. Toxicity-based conditions may be implemented as part of Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) authorisations or to control emissions under the Water Resources Act. [Pg.35]

The single most discussed issue of harmonisation must have been and still is the scope of the EU ETS Directive. Despite efforts by the Commission to use in the Directive s scope definition wording extracted from previous legislation (the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive), the desired clarity failed to materialise. Three... [Pg.236]

The register represents a key element of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive. It is also linked to the 1999 Aarhus Convention on Access to information and public participation in environmental matters , which includes the disclosure of site-specific information of relevant polluting sources. The EPER will be a further step in improving public awareness and meeting the public right to know requirement. [Pg.40]

Regulation is an important factor in shaping trends in this area. In the developed world Clean Water Acts define the water requirements, and legislation such as the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) in the USA and Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) in Europe ensures that contaminated land is reclaimed, and encourages companies to make use of licensed waste disposal sites. The practice of deep-well disposal is also less widely spread. [Pg.100]

In the European Union, for example, the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive requires the operator to use the Best Available Technique (BAT) to protect the environment. This includes the concept that the cost should not be excessive . The term technique covers both technology and operating/maintenance practices. Thus, a new plant is expected to comply with BAT, which will change as advances are made. An existing plant will be required to up-grade to the BAT (which may differ from that for a new plant) after an appropriate period. [Pg.384]
