The current debate over controversial global warming theories will continue. The impact of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, whether they are increasing or not over time, and the effect on climate and economics will continue to he discussed. Obviously, acute or chronic toxicity is not an issue with the use of C02. Similarly, the ecological impact of carbon dioxide is negligible when used as a solvent, and C02 is—by definition—not regulated as a VOC. The application of C02 as a solvent in chemical synthesis would not generate any additional carbon dioxide and therefore would not contribute to greenhouse gas emission. Developing countries like China and India would be exempt from the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. China and India have plans to build over 600 coal-fired plants. The use of biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine dramatically reduces the emissions of unbumed hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ozone-forming hydrocarbons, and particulate matter. The net contribution of carbon dioxide from biomass combustion is small. [Pg.72]

The sulfur plant of the energy refinery, as contrasted to other sulfur plant applications, will have a high concentration of carbon dioxide.
