Street JC, Sharma RP. 1975. Alteration of induced cellular and humoral immune responses by pesticides and chemicals of environmental concern Quantitative studies of immuno-suppression by DDT, Aroclor 1254, carbaryl, carbofuran and methylparathion. Toxicol Appl Pharmacol 32 587-602. [Pg.315]

The number of immunocompromised persons is continually increasing as advances are made in medicine. The life expectancy for persons with cancer, HIV infection, and solid organ or bone marrow transplantation is increasing. Vaccination provides one tool to prevent infection in the immunocompromised host however, the individual s immuno-suppressed state will alter the response to vaccine. In general all vaccinations should be updated prior to the person becoming immunosuppressed, if possible. Once a person becomes significantly immunosuppressed, live virus vaccines should be avoided. [Pg.1249]

Intramolecular ring opening is also exemplified in the synthesis of (4R)-4-[(/i)-2-butcnyl]-4-/V-dimcthyl-L-thrconine (MeBmt 34), an unusual //-hydroxy-a-amino acid of cyclosporine (35),30 which is a clinically used immuno-suppressing agent. [Pg.208]

Mycophenolate sodium (62 Myfortic ) Mycophenolic acid (61) Fatty acid antibiotic NP Microbial Immuno- suppression Inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) activity 215-217, 532-560... [Pg.21]

Finally, we consider physiological expression or suppression, and the long latent period between carcinogen treatment and tumor appearance. While it makes sense to think in terms of phenotypic lag, clonal growth, vascularization, immuno-suppression, and other phenomena, we just do not know enough today to define clear-cut experimental approaches. However, at the human level, the undesirable endpoints of this series of processes are clear teratologic syndromes, cancer, and heritable birth defects. [Pg.16]

There are occasional anomalies to the rule that food reduces and delays peak plasma concentration. The anti-fungal drug, griseofulvin, has enhanced absorption if taken with a meal - possibly because it becomes emulsified by bile salts and passes more readily into the lymphatic drainage of the gut which bypasses the liver, entering the venous system directly. The immuno-suppressant cyclosporin, and calcium salts in general, show a similar increase in absorption when taken with a fatty meal. [Pg.150]

Cyclosporine, the immuno-suppressant, had its Cp increased by 300% after grapefruit juice, with the same oral dose (and no evidence of reduction in loss or distribution volume). [Pg.150]

In most patients who develop CRF, renal transplantation from cadaver donors or living related donors is desirable. Post-transplant immuno-suppression with calcineurin inhibitors (e.g. cyclosporin, tacrolimus), anti-proliferative agents (e.g. azathioprine, myco-phenolate mofetil) and steroids (prednisolone), singly or in combination, are required. It has been... [Pg.611]

In severe acute disease parenteral steroids and other immuno-suppressants, ciclosporin, and infliximab may be required. There is little evidence to support the use of any accessory treatments. Constipation associated with colonic dysfunction may be helped by a high fibre diet but this will have no intrinsic effect on the inflammation. In severe acute exacerbations of extensive disease, fluid replacement intravenously and blood transfusion may be needed. [Pg.625]

The disease modifying drugs (DMDs/ DMARDs) used are gold, d-penicillamine, hydroxychloroquine, sulfasalazine and immuno-suppressants like methotrexate, azathioprine, cyclosporin etc. [Pg.92]

It is a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor immuno-suppressant. Benefit in RA is due to inhibition of cytokine production, chemo-taxis and cell mediated immune reaction. [Pg.93]

What about people on chemotherapy A giant building with 2,000 people is not where you would want an immuno-suppressed person to be, but there were not other options. One of our families refused to have anything to do with us helping them move out. The woman (on chemo) said she had never received as much love as she had been receiving at that shelter, and she would rather have her last days in that environment than alone in a hospital room. [Pg.202]

Bugula neritina) and related organisms produce substances with antibacterial, antitumor (e.g. bryostatins, didemnin B, dolastatin, girodazol, halichondrin B), anti-inflammatory (e.g. pseudopterosin E, manoalide derivatives), antifungal, antiviral, or immuno-suppressive (e.g. microcolin A and B) activity [399,400]. These compounds and/or their synthetic derivatives may be important novel bioactive pharmaceutical substances. It is also very Hkely that some new natural marine substances or their derivatives can be used as antifouling compounds, insecticides, or fungicides. [Pg.152]

PBBs cause immuno-suppression at levels that also cause a number of the other toxic effects described [5],... [Pg.91]

A series of mass mortalities in aquatic mammals occurred in the last decade. The North Sea harbor seal epizootic of 1988, the US bottle nose dolphin die-off of 1987-1988, mass mortality of Baikal seals in 1987-1988, and mortality in Mediterranean striped dolphin in this decade (1990-1991) are well known. Though the primary cause of death is known to have been infection with a virus, it is highly possible that immuno suppression induced by toxic CBs may have contributed additionally [123]. Congener-specific data on marine mammals to elucidate this fact appeared only in the mid-1980s. [Pg.145]

An important advance in preclinical models for anticancer agents was the development of immuno-suppressed mouse strains that allowed for the reproducible implantation and growth of human tumor cells in vivo. The first xenograft of a human colon cancer cell line into immunocompromised "nude" mice was reported in 1969 by Rygaard and Povlsen (41). [Pg.453]

Live virus vaccination is unsafe in immuno-suppressed subjects, e.g. systemic prednisolone > 2 mg/kg per day for > 1 week in the preceding 3 months, as it may cause the disease, but active immunisation with killed vaccines or toxoids will give normal response unless the dose of steroid is high, when the response may be suppressed. [Pg.671]

Resveratrol has been reported to have chemo-preventive activity in a mouse model of carcinogenesis, but there is a concentration-dependent effect, and at the concentrations used in vitro the effect is predominantly antiproliferative. It has also been reported to have mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic activity against a variety of cell lines. Resveratrol has been reported to inhibit the constitutive COX-1, but it is not clear whether it inhibits the inducible COX-2. These cyclo-oxygenases stimulate tumor growth by acting on cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and immuno-suppression.f °° ... [Pg.2444]

Liposomal amphotericin has been given to an immuno-suppressed renal transplant patient with cerebral aspergillosis for almost 10 months at a cumulative dose of 42 g with no apparent changes in the function of the renal... [Pg.203]

The indications for daclizumab arc prophylaxis of acute organ rejection in patients receiving renal tran.splants, as part of an immuno.suppressant regimen including cyclosporine and corticosteroids. The mechanism of action is the same as that of basiliximab. [Pg.189]
