Hair Coloring Regulation Issues. In the United States the classification of color additives is complex. Under the Federal Food, Dmg and Cosmetic Act, all cosmetic colors must be the subject of an approved color additive petition to the Food and Dmg Administration there is an exception for coal-tar colorants used to color hair. Based on the composition of these colorants, FDA can require a certification on each manufactured batch of colorant to assure conformance with the approved specifications. In the early 1990s FDA has required certification only for synthetically derived coal-tar type colors. Many of the approved color additives, both certified and noncertified, are restricted ia their potential use. These restrictions can be found ia the color additive regulations ia the Code of Federal Regulations at 21 CFR 73 and 74. [Pg.458]

Synthetic Derivatives of Indoles as Pharmaceuticals. Thousands of indole derivatives have been prepared and evaluated as potential pharmaceuticals (32). Of those which have been put into use perhaps the most important are the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent indomethacin [53-86-1] (10) (33) and the p-adrenergic blocker pindolol [13823-86-9] (11) (34). [Pg.87]

Synthetic Pyrethroid Insecticides. Elucidation of the chemical stmctures of the naturally occurring pyrethmm esters, their rapid and selective insecticidal action, and their high cost stimulated the search for effective synthetic derivatives (13,17,21). Since the 1940s, stmctural optimisation has produced an array of broad-spectmm insecticides with activity 10- to 20-fold greater than other types of insecticides, and with extended residual action. These synthetic pyrethroids have become one of the most important classes of insecticides with world aimual production estimated at 6000 t (21). [Pg.272]

Carbamate Insecticides. These are stmcturaUy optimi2ed derivatives of the unique plant alkaloid physostigmine [57-47-6] a cholinergic dmg isolated in 1864 from Phjsostigma venenosum (see Alkaloids) (17,24,35—39). The carbamates maybe considered synthetic derivatives of the synaptic neurotransmitter acetylcholine, with very low turnover numbers. The A/,A/-dimethylcarbamates of heterocycHc enols (36) and the Ai-methylcarbamates of a variety of substituted phenols (35) with a wide range of insecticidal activity were described in 1954 (35). The latter are the most widely used carbamate insecticides, and the A/-methylcatbamates of oximes have subsequentiy been found to be effective systemic insecticides. [Pg.290]

Several chemical transformations in the chlorin series were discovered during the course of Woodward s total synthesis of chlorophyll a.3a d An important reaction in the final steps of this total synthesis is the removal of an a-oxo acid ester residue from the 17-position of the chlorin 22, which proceeds very smoothly in the presence of base by a retro-aidol-type fragmentation to yield the chlorin isopurpurin methyl ester (23) which is also available by degradation of chlorophyll a, so that at this point of the synthesis synthetically derived material could be compared with an authentic sample prepared from natural chlorophyll a. [Pg.632]

Everolimus (RAD) is a synthetic derivative (40-O-(2-hydroxyethyl)rapamycin) of SRL with a shorter half-life. Its molecular mode of action resembles that of SRL. [Pg.620]

NMDA (iV-methyl-D-aspartic acid) is a synthetic derivative of aspartic acid and represents the prototypical agonist at the NMDA receptors for which the latter were named. [Pg.861]

Vitamin A (retinol) and its naturally occurring and synthetic derivatives, collectively referred to as retinoids (chemical structure), exert a wide variety of profound effects in apoptosis, embryogenesis, reproduction, vision, and regulation of inflammation, growth, and differentiation of normal and neoplastic cells in vertebrates. [Pg.1072]

The TAAR receptor system has also been associated with body temperature regulation on the basis of putative thyroid hormone metabolites and their synthetic derivatives (thyronamines) activating TAAR1 in rodents. However, as these effects are only observed with thyronamine concentrations several orders of magnitude above physiological levels, and as the specificity of these compounds has not been determined, the physiological significance of these observations is unclear. [Pg.1221]

Detailed information about carotenoids found in food or extracted from food and evaluated for their potential as food colorants appeared in Sections 4.2 and 6.2. We would like to mention some new data about the utilization of pure carotenoid molecules or extracts as allowed food additives. Looking to the list of E-coded natural colorants (Table 7.2.1), we can identify standardized colorants E160a through f, E 161a, and E161b as natural or semi-synthetic derivatives of carotenoids provided from carrots, annatto, tomatoes, paprika, and marigold. In addition, the extracts (powders or oleoresins) of saffron, - paprika, and marigold are considered more economical variants in the United States and European Union. [Pg.523]

Color additives are naturally and synthetically derived. In the past 20 years, consumers have become increasingly aware of the ingredients in their foods and they desire foods be as natural as possible. This fact combined with technological developments have fueled the increases in uses of naturally derived colors. Moreover, additives must be safe and stable in food matfices. Legislation has established which colorants may be used as food additives, taking into account toxicity of compounds and methods of assessment. The European Union currently allows the use of 13 naturally derived colors but 26 colors are exempt from certification... [Pg.558]

The photodimerization of anthracene has been utilized to produce a number of interesting synthetic derivatives which are essentially photo-isomers of the starting materials,[Pg.28]

The British had two major conflicts with the Chinese over opium, in fact, they were called the Opium Wars in 1839 and 1856. These wars would force the Chinese to import opium to help control the population. The fact that opium, cocaine and their synthetic derivatives are illegal has only increased their value. In the same way that the Prohibition Act of the 1930 s allowed organized crime to get a great tax free start, the drug dealers of today have enormous sums of wealth to legitimately buy into any kind of business or government in the world. [Pg.12]

Siderophores are iron-complexing compounds of low molecular weight that are synthesized by bacteria and fungi, and serve to deliver iron to the microbes. Because of their exclusive affinity and specificity for Fe3+, natural siderophores and synthetic derivatives have been exploited in the treatment of human iron-overload diseases. The most successfully used example is Desferal , which is the methane sulfonate derivative of iron-free ferrioxamine B, a linear trihydroxamate (Figure 3.2). Ferrioxamine was isolated in 1958 from the culture supernatant of Streptomyces... [Pg.93]

As most of the nitroxyl spin-labelled synthetic derivatives of conjugated polyenes are light yellow crystals, the bond lengths were determined by X-ray crystallography38. The spectroscopic method used to measure the conformation is electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR). It is beyond the scope of the present review to explain the method38 but the authors of the pertinent paper conclude that ENDOR is an accurate non-crystallographic method to determine polyene structures in solution. [Pg.499]

The phorbol esters are useful for studying the function of PKC since they mimic the stimulatory effects of DAG on the enzyme. These tumor-promoting plant products and their synthetic derivatives are able to penetrate intact cells. Many inferences regarding the intracellular actions of PKC are based on results of studies on whole-cell preparations with the phorbol esters. These substances, like DAG, may produce feedback inhibition of signal transduction at a number of metabolic levels. Results of experiments using phorbol esters in whole cells are thus often complex and must be interpreted cautiously. Notwithstanding this consideration, based upon... [Pg.357]
