Hydrophobic/hydrophobicity interactions

Topical spermicides such as nonoxynol-9 (N9) and benzalkonium chloride act on sperm membranes through a detergent effect, namely, hydrophobe-hydrophobe interaction between the active and substrate (spermatozoa). The idea was to optimize the cationic/hydrophobic polymer in the drug delivery system so epithelial cells were protected without sacrificing the drug s spermicidal activity. One of the questions that needed to be answered in designing an optimum cationic/hydrophobe modified polymer was the effect of the hydrophobe on the drug activity (N9 initially, and other actives subsequently). [Pg.221]

The molecular characteristics exploited for the separation of proteins and peptides include molecular size (size exclusion chromatography, SEC), net charge (ion-exchange chromatography, IEC), polarity (reverse-phase chromatography, RPC), hydrophobicity (hydrophobic interaction... [Pg.267]

Hydrophobic, hydrophobic interactions A hydrophobic residue is one that will not interact with water. The term "hydrophobic interactions" refers to the tendency of hydrophobic groups to aggregate in aqueous solution. [Pg.921]

Octadecyltrichlorosilane-patterned Si surface in aqueous acetonitrile solution facilitated positive deposition to produce PPy film with a negative pattern, whereas negative deposition occurred in nonaqueous solution, resulting in a positive PPy pattern. The electrodeposition preferentially occurred on the exposed area of the gold substrate, even though the deposition on the octadecanthiol-covered area could not be prevented because of the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction. [Pg.318]

We have focused on the design of multistimuli-responsive nanoparticles using a mixture of block copolymers having a common temperature-responsive segment. The shell-mixed nanoparticles (shell poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (poly(NIPAAm)) and PEO segments) have been prepared via hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction [44], stereocomplex interaction [45], and electrostatic interaction [46]. We used the temperature-responsive poly(NIPAAm) segment for the shell-mixed nanoparticles. Poly(NIPAAm)-fo-poly(NIPAAm-co-HMAAm)s... [Pg.10]

The properties of surfactant molecules properties are (i) their ability to form different aggregate structures (micelles) above die critical micellar concentration (CMC), (ii) their ability to solubilize water-insoluble organic molecules (M) by hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions, and (iii) their adsorption on electrodes changes the solution-metal interface, which alters redox reactions and produces template effects on the electrode surface (79) (Schem 2). SDS can be used to electropolymerize various thiophene derivatives such as EDOT, BT and MOT in aqueous solution. [Pg.47]

The complex formation by polymer-surfactant interaction has been extensively studied, as well for ionic and non-ionic polymers as for the different surfactant types, for example anionic, cationic and non-ionic low molecular weight surfactants. The driving forces for these complex formations are in general electrostatic or hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions between polymer and siufactant. These concepts have been extended to block copolymer systems mainly to those containing a water-soluble PEO block, such as PPO-PEO, PS-PEO, PEO-PMAA, PMMA-PEO in the presence of anionic or cationic surfactants [258]. [Pg.212]

However, some substances whose presence is not welcomed remain at least in part through all these stages with the main bulk of the protein, owing to their ability to complex with it by hydrogenbonding or by hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction. These include nucleic acids, polyphenols and phenolic acids, iso-flavones and, possibly, saponins. It must be added that, though there is evidence that some interference with protein utilisation may still occur, these probably do not represent dangerous toxic hazards. [Pg.314]

CNT-vinyl monomer adsorption via hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction in aqueous solution... [Pg.175]

There are a few examples of both rate deceleration and acceleration, which are caused by factors including apparently hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions. The effects of the concentrations of caffeine (1) on pseudo-first-order rate constants (k bs) for alkaline hydrolysis of ethyl 4-aminobenzoate (benzocaine) in aqueous solvents are probably clear manifestations of the effects of hydrophobic interactions on reaction rates. The contribution due to k [H20][benzocaine] should be insignificant compared to koH[HO ][benzocaine] because of the fact that the value of k for phenyl acetate is 3 x 10 M setr at 25°CP The most plausible mechanism for alkaline hydrolysis of benzocaine at pH > 7 is shown in Scheme 2.8 where k2-step is the rate-determining step. [Pg.106]

Furthermore, the mechanisms of charge-charge interaction and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction are different from each other, and the dielectric constant of the Stem or palisade layer is certainly not uniform. Therefore, it is umeasonable to assume that the two ionic solubilizates of different hydrophobic-ity, such as HO and PS , should have uniform concentration distributions throughout the Stem or palisade layer. [Pg.234]
