Humans effects

Ventilation noise and the annoyance effects which may result have been a recurring question in recent years for researchers, occupational health services, and various aurhorities. In spite of this, there are still major shortcomings in our knowledge about the links between human effects and exposure to ventilation noise. Current regulations and recommendations are thus based on uncertain principles in certain respects. 

The description of the physical characteristics of ventilation noise is based on more reliable knowledge than the description of the human effect. Misconceptions about the levels and frequency characteristics of ventilation noise are still common. This in turn has sometimes led to wrong suggestions about the measures that should be taken in order to eliminate the effects of a ventilation noise exposure. 

This chapter examines climatic and tectonic controls on erosion in the tropics and the implications of these observations regarding the composition of erosion products in general. The role of glaciations in continental denudation will then be examined and contrasted with tropical conditions. Finally, we will briefly examine human effects.

Animal studies support he human evidence of neurobehavioral toxicity from prenatal exposure to low levels of lead. In an extensive review of the literature, Davis et al. (1990) discussed similarities between human effects and those in animals. The authors concluded that qualitatively "... the greatest similarities between human and animal effects involve cognitive and relatively complex behavioral processes such as learning." They further reported that quantitative relationships for PbB levels across species that cause developmental neurobehavioral effects are 10-15 pg/dL in children, <15 pg/dL in primates, and <20 pg/dL in rodents.

Interpretation of the results of a study should be truly scientific and integrative. It is elementary to have the report state only each statistically and biologically significant finding in an orderly manner. The meaning and significance of each in relation to other findings, as well as the relevance to potential human effects, must be evaluated and addressed. 

Body Weight Effects. No specific effects on body weight have been noted in humans. Effects on body weight (decreases) in animals were usually associated with administration of high doses and were not observed in chronic toxicity studies (Chemoff et al. 1979a Deichmann et al. 1970 Goldenthal 1978a Kavlock et al. 1981 NCI 1978 Treon et al. 1955).
