Other Findings

With the exception of the occurrence of phytanic acid there are no typical serum findings in HAP. Total serum lipids and total serum cholesterol may be low, but are usually normal. Lipoprotein electrophoresis, performed in a few cases, gave normal results. In contrast to a-beta-lipoproteinemia, with which HAP has many common symptoms, beta-lipoproteins are present. [Pg.361]

A questionable and inconsistent increase of alpha-2 macroglobulins in one patient was found by Harders and Dieckmann (1964) by Immunoelectrophoresis. A recent ultracentrifugal study by Eldjarn et al. (1965 a) also revealed an abnormal serum protein pattern in three patients with HAP, consisting of a slight increase of the total protein and elevated levels of the M ( 19 S ) component. In addition, there was diminution of the G ( 7 S ) component in one subject. [Pg.361]

The cerebrospinal fluid protein is elevated in all cases of HAP, while the cell count is normal. Protein levels usually range from 100 to 700 mg per 100 ml, but may be higher in some cases. Frequently there is some correlation between the severity of the clinical picture and the protein concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid. [Pg.362]

An elevated N-acetyl-neuraminic acid content relative to the protein content was described by Richterich in a female patient, and is found in a variety of central nervous system disorders (Saifer and Gerstenfield 1962). Spinal fluid protein electrophoresis in the case of Harders and Dieckmann (1964) showed a normal pattern. Eldjarn et al. (1966) also found a normal protein distribution of the spinal fluid upon electrophoresis 94% of the protein sedimented with the A ( 4 S ) component in the ultracentrifuge. [Pg.362]

Many companies require that all their pressure essels lie constructed in accordance with Division 2 because of the more exacting standards. Others find that they can purchase less expensive vessels by allowing manufacturers the choice of either Division 1 or Division 2. Normally, manufacturers will choose Division 1 for low -prcssure vessels and Division 2 for high-pressure vessels. [Pg.331]

Support has been shown to influence selectivity and some workers have obtained higher yields of cis isomer over palladium-on-calcium carbonate or palladium-on-barium sulfate 21), whereas others find carbon satisfactory. In general, carbon support makes the more active catalyst and it is, therefore, more prone to become hydrogen poor. [Pg.58]

Simultaneous ESR and electrochemical measurements on a polypyrrole film give convincing evidence that the charging process in this film involves the generation of paramagnetic species which are obviously intermediates in the process of switching from the neutral to the oxidized state In any case, independent of all other findings,... [Pg.37]

In contrast to other findings [139], a substantial increase in y is observed upon extending the conjugation length (see 99-101 vs 90-92, Fig. 8). However, this increase in 7 goes along with a considerable increase in molecular mass and, therefore, only a moderate enhancement of the macroscopic which expresses the third-order nonfinearity per unit volume, is observed. [Pg.73]

Coma. Patients with PCP-induced coma are unresponsive to stimuli, are nonverbal, and have closed eyes. Some patients may have no other findings. Others may have any of the motor and autonomic signs and disturbances of vital signs listed above. A triad of coma-apnea-seizures occurs in this group. [Pg.226]

This is the scope covered in this book, hinted at by the images on the cover that range from galaxies to planets to a DNA molecule. Horst Rauchfuss is among those rare few individuals who understand the greater evolutionary narrative, and his book is an account of the conceptual map he has drawn to help others find their own path through the wilderness. [Pg.345]

Identification of trace amounts of impurities and/or isomers by these techniques is a rather exhausting task. We and others find that the HPLC method is more useful for identifying linkage isomer impurities (e.g., involving N- or S-bound thiocyanate).32,112... [Pg.755]

There is considerable confusion as to how the class, transition is affected by molecular orientation, In some experiments orientation lowers the apparent Tg, value in the direction parallel to the orientation (110.113), The Tg value in the direction perpendicular to the orientation, on the other hand, may be increased (111). Others find that orientation increases Ihe Tg, value ( 1 1 4. 1 15). Still others find no change in Tg value with stretching... [Pg.22]

Fort Wayne Christian School does not necessarily endorse the content of this book from the standpoint of morals, philosophy, theology, or scientific hypothesis. We have searched diligently for the best books that are available and we feel this is the best we could purchase at the time. We are grateful when others find better books and then pass the information on to us. [Pg.102]

These and other findings relating to the importance of ACW justified the concept of antioxidant homeostasis in organisms and postulate the ACW as a central and evidently regulated parameter (comparable with pH or body temperature) [2],... [Pg.511]

Despite these positive findings, results from inhibitor studies are controversial. Thus, sulphobromophthalein, a known inhibitor of glutathione-S-transferase [42] has been reported both to inhibit [43] and not to inhibit [44—47] vasorelaxation by GTN, while other findings [48] favored involvement of the enzyme in GTN metabolism of cultured smooth muscle cells. [Pg.36]

Ken Kesey has reputedly said that alpha-methyltryptamine, in oral doses of ca. 30 mg, peaks in about 12 hours, produces a trip similar to psilocybin, but nicer, and is the "Rolls Royce of psychedelics," but others find it unpleasant. Alpha-ethyltryptamine produces minimal LSD-type effects at 150 mg orally, but effects of... [Pg.55]

Interpretation of the results of a study should be truly scientific and integrative. It is elementary to have the report state only each statistically and biologically significant finding in an orderly manner. The meaning and significance of each in relation to other findings, as well as the relevance to potential human effects, must be evaluated and addressed. [Pg.255]

Another unanswered question is the evaluation of the effect on cardiac repolarization of oncologic drugs, for which the thorough QT/QTc study in volunteers cannot be performed [166], In these cases, not only central tendency (i.e. mean QTc increase) and proportion of outliers but also other findings such as syncope, ventricular tachyarrhythmias and other cardiac effects should be more closely defined. [Pg.76]
