Other Findings

With the exception of the occurrence of phytanic acid there are no typical serum findings in HAP. Total serum lipids and total serum cholesterol may be low, but are usually normal. Lipoprotein electrophoresis, performed in a few cases, gave normal results. In contrast to a-beta-lipoproteinemia, with which HAP has many common symptoms, beta-lipoproteins are present. 

A questionable and inconsistent increase of alpha-2 macroglobulins in one patient was found by Harders and Dieckmann (1964) by Immunoelectrophoresis. A recent ultracentrifugal study by Eldjarn et al. (1965 a) also revealed an abnormal serum protein pattern in three patients with HAP, consisting of a slight increase of the total protein and elevated levels of the M ( 19 S ) component. In addition, there was diminution of the G ( 7 S ) component in one subject. 

The cerebrospinal fluid protein is elevated in all cases of HAP, while the cell count is normal. Protein levels usually range from 100 to 700 mg per 100 ml, but may be higher in some cases. Frequently there is some correlation between the severity of the clinical picture and the protein concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid. 

An elevated N-acetyl-neuraminic acid content relative to the protein content was described by Richterich in a female patient, and is found in a variety of central nervous system disorders (Saifer and Gerstenfield 1962). Spinal fluid protein electrophoresis in the case of Harders and Dieckmann (1964) showed a normal pattern. Eldjarn et al. (1966) also found a normal protein distribution of the spinal fluid upon electrophoresis 94% of the protein sedimented with the A ( 4 S ) component in the ultracentrifuge.

Many companies require that all their pressure essels lie constructed in accordance with Division 2 because of the more exacting standards. Others find that they can purchase less expensive vessels by allowing manufacturers the choice of either Division 1 or Division 2. Interpretation of the results of a study should be truly scientific and integrative. It is elementary to have the report state only each statistically and biologically significant finding in an orderly manner. The meaning and significance of each in relation to other findings, as well as the relevance to potential human effects, must be evaluated and addressed. 

Another unanswered question is the evaluation of the effect on cardiac repolarization of oncologic drugs, for which the thorough QT/QTc study in volunteers cannot be performed [166], In these cases, not only central tendency (i.e. mean QTc increase) and proportion of outliers but also other findings such as syncope, ventricular tachyarrhythmias and other cardiac effects should be more closely defined.
