Equipment handling

Physical requirements of fluid fertilizers include freedom from sediments, suitably low viscosity, low vapor pressure, and noncorrosivity with regard to available handling equipment. Using anhydrous ammonia, the chief physical concerns, are in the safety of handling under pressure and the minimizing of vapor loss during injection into the sod. 

The tabulation of plant nutrient costs, by product, ia Table 16 shows the principal reasoa for the popularity of anhydrous ammonia as a fertilizer ia the United States. The fob price per ton of nitrogen in the form of ammonia is less than half that for any other nitrogen product. Also, ammonia s relatively high nitrogen content of 82.2% favors low transportation costs, in spite of the need for specialized handling equipment and procedures. 

Structural Components. In most appHcations stmctural foam parts are used as direct replacements for wood, metals, or soHd plastics and find wide acceptance in appHances, automobUes, furniture, materials-handling equipment, and in constmction. Use in the huil ding and constmction industry account for more than one-half of the total volume of stmctural foam appHcations. High impact polystyrene is the most widely used stmctural foam, foUowed by polypropylene, high density polyethylene, and poly(vinyl chloride). The constmction industry offers the greatest growth potential for ceUular plastics. 

Induction heating equipment installations can require significant investment in electric power components as well as the work handling equipment made necessary by the process. These costs can be offset by savings in plant space, reduction in metal loss, precise control of product temperature, and reduced in-process inventory. A typical continuous induction heating line consumes about 360 kW h/t heating carbon steel bars to 1230°C. 

Low level waste with its generally smaller radioactivity level can be stored in suitable containers in buildings. Protective shielding and handling equipment are required. 

Wood Residuals. Chips, sawdust, and other residuals such as planar shavings are used as a primary source of fiber for some pulp mills. Chips are screened and placed in a purchased chip pile. Sawdust and other residuals obtained from wood processing plants must be cooked separately and requite special digesters and handling equipment. These materials may also be burned as hog fuel. 

As with SMC, appHcations are limited to high volume because of the capital investment in equipment and tooling. Thermoset compression molders require additional heating and material Handling equipment to adapt their process to thermoplastic sheet fabrication. AppHcations include automotive bumper beams, load floors, radiator supports, battery trays, and package shelves. Chair sheUs, military containers, material Handling pallets, trays, and concrete foaming pans are also produced. 

Concentration Control. Sequestration, solubilization, and buffering depend on the concentration control feature of chelation. Traces of metal ions are almost universally present in Hquid systems, often arising from the materials of the handling equipment if not introduced by the process materials. Despite very low concentrations, some trace metals produce undesirable effects such as coloration or instabiHty. 

Several developments are being pursued to utilize coal directly, ie, automation of controls, coal and ash handling equipment for smaller stoker and pulverized coal-fired units, design of packaged boiler units, and pollution control equipment. In the cement industry coal firing has been used, because the sulfur oxides react with some of the lime to make calcium sulfate in an acceptable amount.

Chloramine-T, sodium A/-chloro-/)-toluenesulfonamide [127-65-17, was widely used during World War I for the treatment of infected wounds, and subsequentiy for hygienic purposes such as mouthwashes, douches, etc. It can be used for sanitising food-handling equipment, but its activity is considerably slower than that of hypochlorites. The Grade A Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (1985) and the Ordinance and Code for Restaurants (1948) of the U.S. Pubhc Health Service permitted the use of chloramine-T. 

Industrial dryers may be broadly classified by heat-transfer method as being either direct or indirect heat. Dryers evolved from material handling equipment and thus most types of industrial dryers are specially suited for certain forms of material. Dryers are also classified as being batch or continuous. 

Equipment Costs. Equipment costs include the purchased cost of process and materials handling equipment, storage faciUties, waste treatment equipment, stmctures, and site service faciUties. Installation costs such as insulation, piping, painting and finishing, foundations, process stmctures, instmmentation, and electrical service connections are estimated or factored separately. Actual quoted prices from suppHers are the best data, but these are not usually available when estimates are made. The quick, inexpensive cost estimates are based largely on personal cost files, internal company cost data, or pubUshed cost correlations.

Bulk Blenders Vlanv of the mixers used for solids blending (Sec, 19) are also suitable for some liquid-solids blending. Ribbon blenders can be used for such tasks as wetting out or coating a powder, When the final paste product is not too fluid, other solids-handling equipment finds frequent use. 

Power requirements for spiral plants are low, consisting primarily of pumping energy and possibly a thickener or other pulp-handling equipment associated with the flowsheet. 

Permeability Bulk sohd permeability is important in the iron and steel industiy where gas-solid reactions occur in the sinter plant and blast furnace. It also strongly influences compac tion processes where entrapped gas can impede compaction, and solids-handling equipment where restricted gas flow can impede product flowabihty. The permeabihty of a granular bed is inferred from measured pressure drop under controlled gas-flow conditions. 

NFPA 30 details the design features and safe placement of handling equipment for flammable and combustible hquids. 

Regularly (at least annually) review all chemical feed and handling equipment.
