Materials-handling equipment, description

Once the manufacturing projection questions have been answered, a manufacturing philosophy must be decided on. This includes deciding on documentation requirements, special materials handling, controlled substance security, cleaning validation criteria, and equipment and facility qualification requirements. Now that we know what types of batches are to be manufactured, we can be more detailed in the description of the requirements of the facility. These requirements may be based on internal as well as regulatory requirements. In fact, if a full-scale facility is already in place, this step can be completed fairly easily and quickly. Many of the policies and systems may be transferred directly into the pilot facility. And others may be transferred with only slight modifications.

Description of hazard. Water plant operations and maintenance tasks include various materials-handling activities. These work activities include manual lifting and the operation of cranes and hoists and powered industrial trucks, and other tasks related to water treatment and distribution. Workers can be at risk of collisions with moving parts and equipment, strain or injury from exertion or improper techniques, and other injuries. 

The choice of test equipment to be used depends on the conditions, such as scale, temperature, mixing, and materials of construction, at which the substance or mixture is to be handled. The interpretation of the data from each of these tests is strongly dependent on the manner in which the test is run and on the inherent characteristics of the testing device. Guidance is provided along with each test description, particularly in the detailed sections later in this chapter.
