The logic and approach used in materials handling also applies to the use of handling equipment to move processed parts. Parts handling equipment (PHE) does not resemble the humanoids of science fiction. Robots are blind, deaf, dumb, and limited to a few preprogrammed motions but in many production jobs that is all that is needed. They are solutions looking for a problem. Most plants can use some degree of PHE, and it can substantially increase productivity. [Pg.301]

Structural Components. In most appHcations stmctural foam parts are used as direct replacements for wood, metals, or soHd plastics and find wide acceptance in appHances, automobUes, furniture, materials-handling equipment, and in constmction. Use in the huil ding and constmction industry account for more than one-half of the total volume of stmctural foam appHcations. High impact polystyrene is the most widely used stmctural foam, foUowed by polypropylene, high density polyethylene, and poly(vinyl chloride). The constmction industry offers the greatest growth potential for ceUular plastics. [Pg.416]

Many pieces of equipment are made up of unitized components from several different vendors. The traditional attitude has been to look to the packaging vendor as the source of supply. Many vendors refuse to handle requests for replacement parts on equipment not directly manufactured by them. More and more specialty companies are entering the equipment parts business some are supplying parts directly to OEM companies for resale as their own brand. Others supply parts directly to the end user. The end user must develop multiple sources of supply for as many parts as possible. [Pg.736]

Polybenzimidazoles have been used for seals, mechanical components, electrical connectors, valve scats, and as components ofmatcrials-handling equipment in the petrochemical, geothermal, chemical process, aerospace, defense, automotive, and electrical products industries. These materials frequently are procured as replacement parts for other materials in an effort to improve equipment performance. [Pg.1334]

The silicone-thermoplastic IPN composites exhibit superior mechanical properties (Table IV), and the network structure of the silicone prevents migration. The value of the IPN has been demonstrated in a molded journal bearing for use in high-speed paper-handling equipment. For example, part wear was reduced to a greater extent in a PTFE-lubricated, silicone-nylon... [Pg.194]

The fiber handling equipment is an important part of a continuous fiber coating furnace. It must be capable of passing the fiber through the furnace at the desired speed. The tension in the fiber must also be controlled without damaging the fiber. This is not trivial with ceramic fibers which have low strain-to-failure values. [Pg.328]

Velocity and concentration profiles are two important parameters often needed by the operator of slurry handling equipment. Several experimental techniques and mathematical models have been developed to predict these profiles. The aim of this chapter is to give the reader an overall picture of various experimental techniques and models used to measure and predict particle velocity and concentration distributions in slurry pipelines. I begin with a brief discussion of flow behavior in horizontal slurry pipelines, followed by a revision of the important correlations used to predict the critical deposit velocity. In the second part, I discuss various methods for measuring solids concentration in slurry pipelines. In the third part, I summarize methods for measuring bulk and local particle velocity. Finally, I review models for predicting solids concentration profiles in horizontal slurry pipelines. [Pg.185]
