Undesirable Effects

Acetic acid has a sharp odor and the glacial acid has a fiery taste and will penetrate unbroken skin to make bUsters. Prolonged exposure to air containing 5—10 mg/m does not seem to be seriously harmful, but there are pronounced, undesirable effects from constant exposure to as high as 26 mg/m over a 10-day period (8). 

Fibers and Fiber Sources. Fibers are present ia varyiag amounts ia food iagredients and are also added separately (see Dietary fiber). Some fibers, including beet pulp, apple pomace, citms pulp, wheat bran, com bran, and celluloses are added to improve droppiags (feces) form by providing a matrix that absorbs water. Some calorie-controUed foods iaclude fibers, such as peanut hulls, to provide gastroiatestinal bulk and reduce food iatake. Peanut hulls normally have a high level of aflatoxias. They must be assayed for aflatoxia and levels restricted to prevent food rejection and undesirable effects of mycotoxias. 

Oral LD q levels have been deterrnined in the mouse at 470 mg/kg (21) and the guinea pig at 7750 mg/kg (22). Several other studies (23—25) have shown that large quantities of both synthetic and natural glycerol can be adniinistered orally to experimental animals and humans without the appearance of adverse effects. Intravenous adniinistration of solutions containing 5% glycerol to animals and humans has been found to cause no toxic or otherwise undesirable effects (26). 

P/M Tool Steels. In conventionally produced high alloy tool steels (slowly cooled cast ingots), carbide tends to segregate (48). Segregated clusters of carbide persist even after hot working, and cause undesirable effects on tool fabrication and tool performance. P/M tool steels, on the other hand, provide very fine and uniform carbides in the compact, the final bar stock, and the tools. Several tool steel suppHers consoHdate gas-atomized tool steel powder by HIP to intermediate shapes, which are then hot-worked to final mill shapes. Water-atomized tool steel powder is also available (see also T OOL materials). ... 

Cromakalim. Cromakalim has along half-life (254). Cromakalim at an oral dose of 1.5 mg ia humans significantly lowers blood pressure 19/12 mm Hg (systohc/diastoHc pressure). It iacreases reaal blood flow, PRA, and heart rate. Cromakalim has bronchodilating activity that is beneficial for hypertensive asthmatic patients. Because of some undesirable effects seen ia cardiac papillary muscles of animals oa long-term treatmeat, future clinical trials are to be carried out usiag the active enantiomer, lemakalim (BRL 38227). 

Concentration Control. Sequestration, solubilization, and buffering depend on the concentration control feature of chelation. Traces of metal ions are almost universally present in Hquid systems, often arising from the materials of the handling equipment if not introduced by the process materials. Despite very low concentrations, some trace metals produce undesirable effects such as coloration or instabiHty. 

Histamine is the biological amine, playing an important role in living systems, but it can also cause unnatural or toxic effects when it is consumed in lai ge amounts. It can occur with some diseases and with the intake of histamine-contaminated food, such as spoiled fish or fish products, and can lead to undesirable effects as headache, nausea, hypo- or hypertension, cai diac palpitations, and anaphylactic shock syndrome. So, there is a need to determine histamine in biological fluids and food. 

I he intermittent operation used in the above method is time-consuming the undesirable effects are overcome by rhe use of a continuous regeneration process, as shown in Fig, 9.19. 

An intentional explosion usutilly has no undesired effects because it is controlled and limited to tut isolated area. E.xamples include e.xplosions from nuclear wctipons, blasting lasers, and gun pow der blasts, and contained e.xplosions (see note b. Table 7.4.4).

The metals in the FCC feed have many deleterious effects. Nickel causes excess hydrogen production, forcing eventual loss in the conversion or thruput. Both vanadium and sodium destroy catalyst structure, causing losses in activity and selectivity. Solving the undesirable effects of metal poisoning involves several approaches ... 

Carbon The solubility of carbon in sodium has been measured it is considered lower than the corresponding value for oxygen (2 p.p.m. of carbon at 520°C) but is sufficiently high to give rise to undesirable effects. Carburisation of refractory metals and of austenitic stainless steels has been observed in sodium contaminated with carbon e.g. oil, grease or a low alloy ferritic steel the source of which can be either decomposed organic material, e.g. oil, or a ferritic steel of low or zero alloy content. The latter is an example of... 

In the kidney, ANG II reduces renal blood flow and constricts preferentially the efferent arteriole of the glomerulus with the result of increased glomerular filtration pressure. ANG II further enhances renal sodium and water reabsorption at the proximal tubulus. ACE inhibitors thus increase renal blood flow and decrease sodium and water retention. Furthermore, ACE inhibitors are nephroprotective, delaying the progression of glomerulosclerosis. This also appears to be a result of reduced ANG II levels and is at least partially independent from pressure reduction. On the other hand, ACE inhibitors decrease glomerular filtration pressure due to the lack of ANG II-mediated constriction of the efferent arterioles. Thus, one important undesired effect of ACE inhibitors is impaired glomerular filtration rate and impaired kidney function. 

Opioid drugs are often more effective than other nonnarcotic treatments, but they are also associated with more side effects making them less suitable for many patients. Higher doses which are more effective are also associated with undesirable effects such as sedation. 

The definition of desired therapeutic and side effects in the case of the benzodiazepines very much depends on the clinical problem in question. The sedative and hypnotic actions are desired effects in the treatment of insomnia, but undesired effects in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Effects that are usually undesired include daytime drowsiness, potentiation of the sedative effects of ethanol, and anterograde amnesia. They are mediated via the benzodiazepine site of GABAa receptors, since they can be antagonized with flumazenil. 

Undesired Effects of Drugs that Interfere with Transporter Function... 

In general, oil and organic matter that degrade or deposit will produce undesirable effects in boilers. The levels of these contaminants in FW should be minimized. Oils that do not volatilize at the operating pressure should be eliminated from the FW (e.g., steam condensate that could be contaminated with these low volatility materials should not be used in FW).
