Hypalon raw polymer compounds or cured product may be disposed of in an approved landfill. Incineration is not recommended because of the evolution of toxic gases. During the manufacture of glass, considerable dust, with particles averaging about 300 /xm in size, will be emitted. Some dusts may also be emitted from the handling of the raw materials involved. Control of this dust to prevent a nuisance problem outside the plant is a necessity. When glass is blown or formed into the finished product, smoke and gases can be released from the contact of the molten glass with lubricated molds. These emissions are quite dense but of a relatively short duration. 

The most widely used pulping process is the kraft process, as shown in Fig. 6-11, which results in recovery and regeneration of the chemicals. This occurs in the recovery furnace, which operates with both oxidizing and reducing zones. Emissions from such recovery furnaces include particulate matter, very odorous reduced sulfur compounds, and oxides of sulfur. If extensive and expensive control is not exercised over the kraft pulp process, the odors and aerosol emissions will affect a wide area. Odor complaints have been reported over 100 km away from these plants. A properly controlled and operated kraft plant will handle huge amounts of material and produce millions of kilograms of finished products per day, with little or no complaint regarding odor or particulate emissions. 

Fluorides and dust are emitted to the air from the fertilizer plant. All aspects of phosphate rock processing and finished product handling generate dust, from grinders and pulverizers, pneumatic conveyors, and screens. The mixer/reactors and dens produce fumes that contain silicon tetrafluoride and hydrogen fluoride. A sulfuric acid plant has two principal air emissions sulfur dioxide and acid mist. If pyrite ore is roasted, there will also be particulates in air emissions that may contain heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, and lead. 

As a general rule, vacuum relief devices are permitted on offsite storage vessels handling clean finished products, since there is essentially no possibility of an internal ignition source. However, vacuum relief devices which permit breaking of a vacuum with inerts or flammable vapors are not permitted on process equipment, since they are not judged to be sufficiently rehable to provide adequate protection under all circumstances. Vacuum devices which permit air to enter may be considered, however, in cases where the equipment does not or cannot contain flammables e.g., some steam systems. 

For a relatively uncomplicated process, review the process from raw materials to finished product. At each handling or processing step, you formulate and answer what-if questions to evaluate the effects of component failures or procedural errors on the process. 

The finished product is essentially sterile and if kept in a germ-free environment will be protected from spoilage. Some manufacturers handle the finished product in clean room conditions to enhance the shelf life.
