For effective volatilization using an enclosed mechanical aeration system, contaminated soil is mixed in a pug mill or rotary drum. The gasoline components are released from the soil matrix by the churning action of the air/soil contact. The induced airflow within the chamber captures the gasoline emissions and passes them through an air pollution control device (e.g., a water scrubber or vapor-phase carbon adsorption system) before they are discharged through a properly sized stack. 

The MacFarland et al. (1984) study is limited with respect to its relevance to human health risk because the animals were exposed to wholly vaporized gasoline, which has the same composition as liquid gasoline and is not the same as the gasoline vapors that humans would be exposed to in ambient conditions. Federal Tier 1 emission standards apply to a vehicle life of 100,000 miles. NOj limits for diesel engines are less stringent than for gasoline. Emissions are measured over the Federal Test Procedure, FTP75, and are expressed in grams/mile.

As a result, hydrophilidty is introduced to the surface. The world production of activated carbons in 2002 was estimated to be about 750000 metric tons. There is discrimination between gas- and liquid-phase carbons. Typical liquid-phase applications are potable water treatment, groundwater remediation, and industrial and municipal waste-water treatment and sweetener decolorization. Gas-adsorption applications are solvent recovery, gasoline emission control, and protection against atmospheric contaminants. 

The result common to aU the studies discussed above, both the historical sediment records and the studies examined by Thomas et al. (20), is the dramatic decrease in lead deposition in the past 15 years (7, 8, 15, 33, 417, 419 30). Whether the drop is attributable mainly to decreased gasoline emissions or to a combination of decreases in automobile, industrial, and other emissions, the existence of the trend is unambiguous. The large quantities of anthropogenic lead already in the environment, though, require continued attention. The remediation of contaminated soil and water, the treatment of lead poisoning, and the elucidation of the mechanisms of lead toxicity are all areas in which a firm understanding of the fundamental chemistry of lead complexes can contribute dramatically. 

Apparentiy the addition of SO2 to the analysis enabled refinement of the coal combustion factor. The newer non-secondary sulfate coal plant emission numbers comport better with known percentages of coal fly ash in ambient air. Coal fly ash (CFA), mainly composed of aluminosihcates with calcium or sodium, iron, and trace materials, is the major primary PM2.5 coal plant stack emission (CFA atmospheric concentrations typically are in the tens of ng/m, up to 200 ng/m, depending on the number of coal plants in the region). The use of temperature, differentiated EC and OC fractions allowed differentiation of diesel and gasoline emissions, and also caused the contributions of other factors to change (e.g., wood smoke).
