Rotary lobe slurry pumps are used with certain soft slurries with mild abrasion characteristics such as wastewater and sewage disposal, flotation slimes, digested scum, lime slurry in waste treatment plants. They are also used in food processing to move potato and starch pulp, mash, food paste, tomato paste, food wastes, and dairy waste and whey in milk processing. They are used in the paper industry to pump lime slurry and adhesives. They are used in the plastic recycling industry to pump plastic and Styrofoam cups. RO, primarily used in the dairy industry, is expanding into other areas of food processing. RO can be used for a variety of operations, ranging from wastewater treatment and material recovery to clarification and concentration. Material recovery is advantageous for two reasons. Thiocyanate [SCN ], the anion of thiocyanic acid, is an important waste product from the chemical industry, it is present in various food items, it may be added to dairy milk to promote bacteriostatic processes, and it is synthesixed in the human liver as part of detoxification of cyanide. A special case in medicine has been generation of large amounts of thiocyanate leading to hypothyroidism after sodium nitroprusside infusion for hypertension (Nourok et at, 1964). After oral ingestion thiocyanate is readily absorbed. It is partly bound to albumin in blood, and mainly eliminated by excretion in urine. PHAs can be produced from waste materials. Waste materials or wastewater may be used to produce PHAs with a reduction in cost. The production of PHB from the waste-activated sludge generated by a combined dairy and food processing industry wastewater treatment plant has been evaluated. Deproteinized jowar grain-based distillery spentwash yielded 42.3 wt% PHB, followed by filtered rice grain-based distillery spentwash, which yielded 40wt%PHB. [Pg.57]
