Pumps plastic

The leak could have been stopped as soon as it was detected if an emergency isolation valve (Section 7.2.1) had been fitted in the pump suction line. On the rebuilt plant such valves were fitted on the pump suction lines, more combustible gas detectors and more extensive insulation were installed, plastic pump bodies were replaced by metal ones, and spillages were directed to collection pits. The plant was built in 1972, when these features were not common practice many improvements had been made since then, but they did not go far enough. Most of those made after the fire could have been made beforehand. [Pg.173]

The cooler is connected to the dispense head by a python . This is an insulated bundle of tubes, one feed tube for each syrup and a loop line of chilled carbonated water, continuously circulating from the cooler, round the dispense head and back to the cooler via the carbonator. The circulation is powered by a lightweight plastic pump when water is not being drawn off and it is carried out to ensure that cold drink can be delivered instantly, even when the dispense head is at a considerable distance from the cooler. [Pg.363]

These polytetrafulorothylene (PTFE) pumps along with the associated plastic expansion joints were installed, because the sponsors were blinded by the advantages. No one took the time to question their suitability in handling flammable liquids. The plastic pumps are just not fire-safe. They are frail in a fierce hydrocarbon fire. The presence of a containment material, such as plastic, can jeopardize the built-in mechanical integrity of the surrounding equipment. [Pg.187]

In the late 1980s pneumatically driven diaphragm pumps were gaining wide acceptance in handling acidic-contaminated water streams in a major chemical complex.
