Waste treatment plant

Hydrochloric acid [7647-01-0], which is formed as by-product from unreacted chloroacetic acid, is fed into an absorption column. After the addition of acid and alcohol is complete, the mixture is heated at reflux for 6—8 h, whereby the intermediate malonic acid ester monoamide is hydroly2ed to a dialkyl malonate. The pure ester is obtained from the mixture of cmde esters by extraction with ben2ene [71-43-2], toluene [108-88-3], or xylene [1330-20-7]. The organic phase is washed with dilute sodium hydroxide [1310-73-2] to remove small amounts of the monoester. The diester is then separated from solvent by distillation at atmospheric pressure, and the malonic ester obtained by redistillation under vacuum as a colorless Hquid with a minimum assay of 99%. The aqueous phase contains considerable amounts of mineral acid and salts and must be treated before being fed to the waste treatment plant. The process is suitable for both the dimethyl and diethyl esters. The yield based on sodium chloroacetate is 75—85%. Various low molecular mass hydrocarbons, some of them partially chlorinated, are formed as by-products. Although a relatively simple plant is sufficient for the reaction itself, a si2eable investment is required for treatment of the wastewater and exhaust gas.

The spent oxidizing solution requires the addition of a reducing agent before it can be discharged to sewer or waste treatment plant. 

Pollution Control Pervaporation is used to reduce the organic loading of a waste stream, thus effecting product recovery and a reduction in waste-treatment costs. An illustration is a waste stream containing II percent (wt) n-propanol. The residue is stripped to 0.5 percent and 96 percent of the alcohol is recovered in the permeate as a 45 percent solution. This application uses a hydrophobic, rubbery membrane. The residue is sent to a conventional waste-treatment plant.

The 4-ft-circular Supracell DAF was used for this testing. The flotation area is 10 ft2. Maximum hydraulic loading is 30 U.S. gpm. The unit was set up adjacent to the aeration basin at the waste treatment plant. A small sump pump was used to pump mixed liquor to the Supracell DAF.

Hexane is probably released to water from a number of sources including industrial discharges, effluents from municipal waste-treatment plants, and nonpoint-source runoff from roads and other surfaces. Insufficient information is available to quantify the releases in a comprehensive fashion. 

Bridie et al. (1979) reported BOD and COD values of 0.00 and 1.72 g/g using filtered effluent from a biological sanitary waste treatment plant. These values were determined using a standard dilution method at 20 °C for a period of 5 d. The ThOD for acrolein is 2.00 g/g.
