Numerous technologies have been developed with varying degrees of success to maximize the various benefits of controlled release. Environmental benefits of Emission Controls. Information in Figure 5 illustrate that the emission of sulphur in eastern North America has declined over the past decade. This decline allows for a possible verification of the dose-response relationships on which the environmental concerns for emissions have been based. A decline in sulphate deposition in Nova Scotia has apparently resulted in a decrease in acidity of eleven rivers over the period 1971-73 to 1981-82 (47), In the Sudbury, Ontario area where emissions have dechned by over 50% between 1974-76 and 1981-83, a resurvey of 209 lakes shows that most lakes have now become less acidic. Twenty-one lakes that had a pH < 5.5 in 1974-76 showed an average decline in acidity of 0.3 pH units over the period (48), Surveys of 54 lakes in the Algoma region of Ontario have shown a rapid response to a decline in sulphate deposition. Two lakes without fish in 1979 have recovered populations as pH of the water moved above 5.5 (49). Evidence is accumulating to support the hypothesis of benefits that were projected as a consequence of emission controls. This provides increased confidence in the projections. [Pg.58]

Chloroacetanilides are soil-applied herbicides used for pre- and early post-emergence control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in crops. Representative chloroacetanilide compounds, alachlor, acetochlor, and metolachlor, are extensively used worldwide. Other chloroacetanilides with limited usages include propachlor, bu-tachlor, metazachlor, pretilachlor, and thenylchlor. Public environmental concerns and government regulatory requirements continue to prompt the need for reliable methods to determine residues of these herbicides. There now exist a variety of analytical methods to determine residues of these compounds in crops, animal products, soil, and water. The chemical structures and major crops in which these compounds are used are summarized in Table 1. [Pg.344]

Silver occurs naturally in several oxidation states, the most common being elemental silver (Ag°) and the monovalent ion (Ag+). Soluble silver salts are, in general, more toxic than insoluble salts. In natural waters, the soluble monovalent species is the form of environmental concern. Sorption is the dominant process that controls silver partitioning in water and its movements in soils and sediments. As discussed later, silver enters the animal body through inhalation, ingestion, mucous membranes, and broken skin. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a family of compounds, manufactured in the United States from 1930-1975, which were used in a number of discard applications and extensively as an electrical insulating fluid (see Chap. 1). It is obvious that such an assessment is formidable, technically difficult, and extremely expensive. Since an environmental source assessment study is required to characterize the total pollution potential of all waste streams, the sampling program must be more extensive than those conducted for the acquisition of process or control engineering data. Assessment sampling is more complete in that all waste streams are sampled and no attempt is made to limit sampling to a preselected number of process streams. The sampling is also more comprehensive in that all substances of potential environmental concern must be detectable above some minimum level of concern. Abstract There is a growing demand for hydrolyzable surfactants, i.e., sirnfactants that break down in a controlled way by changing the pH. Environmental concern is the main driving force behind current interest in these sirnfactants, but they are also of interest in applications where sirnfactants are needed in one stage but later undesirable at another stage of a process. This chapter summarizes the field of hydrolyzable sirnfactants with an emphasis on their more recent development. Surfactants that break down either on the acid or on the alkaline side are described. It is shown that the susceptibility to hydrolysis for many surfactants depends on whether or not the surfactant is in the form of micelles or as free unimers in solution. It is shown that whereas nonionic ester sirnfactants are more stable above the CMC (micellar retardation), cationic ester surfactants break down more readily when aggregated than when present as unimers (micellar catalysis). [Pg.57]
