In the 13 case studies documented processes and experiences of attempts to substitute hazardous substances in the 1980s and 1990s were examined. Finding a Method Various organizations publish volumes of methods for chemical analysis. One of the most well known is the American Society for Testing and Materials, or ASTM. The ASTM is a not-for-profit organization that provides a forum for producers, users, and consumers, to write standards for materials, products, systems, and services. The ASTM (Figure 5.19) publishes standard test methods encompassing metals, paints, plastics, textiles, petroleum, construction, energy, the environment, consumer products, medical services and devices, computerized systems, electronics, and many other areas. More than 10,000 ASTM standards are published each year in the 72 volumes of the Annual Book of ASTM Standards. Individual standards are also available. [Pg.40]

An example for an institutionalized body to fulfil at least partially tasks and functions of tolerability and acceptability assessment and risk appraisal on the national level is the UK Chemical Stakeholder Forum. The forum consists of stakeholders from different associations such as chemical industry, business, environment, consumer protection as well as research institutes. Humans eat fish of more than 1000 fish species approximately 350 of these species are regarded as commercially valuable. The term fish products applies to all marine and freshwater animals, including finfish (i.e., scale fish or bony fish, and sharks and rays) and shellfish (i.e., the crustaceans [e.g., prawns, shrimps, lobsters, Antarctic krill], and mollusks [e.g., squid, oysters, abalone]). The only exceptions are aquatic mammals and frogs (EC Directive 91/493/EEC). Overall, the number of species from aquatic environments consumed by humans is consequently much higher. The marine and freshwater fish consumed by humans are mainly wild-caught. On the other hand, cultured fish contribute about 12% to the world fish catch, but these are mainly freshwater fish. Edible parts of fish include fillets (mainly the muscle tissue called the fish meat, with or without skin), carcasses (e.g., canned), and by-products of some fish species, mainly gonads (roe) and livers (of lean fish). [Pg.228]

The EINECS Inventory, the European Inventory of Existing Chemical Substances, is an inventory of the chemical substances which were on the European Community market between January 1971 and September 1981. Substances which are not in the EINECS inventory are considered new and must pass a notification procedure before they can be marketed in the EC member states. The inventory has been compiled by the Commission of the European Communities (Directorate Gteneral IX, Environment, Consumer Protection and Nuclear Safety) in collaboration with the member states.
