Risk management strategies

In larger organizations, there often are risk management committees or departments. Usually there are well-defined protocols for how to address and report a crisis in such organizations. The protocol often specifies contacting a risk management official, whose role it is to assess the risk to the organization and 

Developing a professional network helps counselors and therapists provide the best care possible to clients. Networks not only work to improve the treatment outcomes of clients, but also can increase the knowledge of therapists and counselors as well as provide for professional support to avoid burnout and poor decisions. Networks can make the process of referring clients much easier as well. 

Best practices. Therapies that researchers have found to be effective for a disorder. Chart notes (or progress notes). Notes in a client s chart that document treatment progress. 

Consultation groups. Groups of professionals who gather to discuss cases. Decomposition. A client s losing control or becoming psychotic. 

Federal confidentiality laws. Laws that protect clients from public disclosure. Lethality of a suicide plan. The likelihood that a plan will lead to a completed suicide.

Take the risk Here the company owns the risk and takes actions to reduce it. Maintaining inventory to manage supply and demand risks is an example of this strategy. 

Share the risk Here the company takes some risks and asks its supply partners to take the rest. An example of this is the portfolio strategy followed by HP to mitigate demand risk. We will discuss HP s portfolio strategy in detail in Section 7.7. 

Transfer the risk Here the company makes its suppliers to assume all the risk. For example, Dell computer has long required its suppliers to maintain inventory of parts near its assembly plant in Texas. 

Reduce the risk Company takes action to reduce the risk to an acceptable level by minimizing the impact of a risk occurrence. For example, HP uses multiple suppliers, geographically displaced, to reduce supply disruptions.

The project "Non-Invasive Inspection within an Asset Risk Management Strategy" is another joint industry project, funded by EC-THERMIE, representing the current trend towards onstream (non-invasive) inspection in combination with risk-based inspection philosophies to establish component condition. As part of an analysis with an existing model that has already undergone development and evaluation or when applying a newly evaluated and accepted model to a case-study, sensitivity analysis can be used to identify key sources of uncertainty that should be the target of additional data collection or research and to identify key sources of controllable variability that can be the focus of risk management strategies. 

In essence, the level of detail and quantification of assessment uncertainties should be related to the quality of the underlying data, the degree of refinement called for in the underlying exposure analysis and decision criteria specified by risk management strategies. 

An example for an institutionalized body to fulfil at least partially tasks and functions of tolerability and acceptability assessment and risk appraisal on the national level is the UK Chemical Stakeholder Forum. The forum consists of stakeholders from different associations such as chemical industry, business, environment, consumer protection as well as research institutes. They gather different perceptions and concerns, evaluate and prioritize different chemicals and propose risk management strategies in order to deliberate the government.
