Because of the widespread applications of surface chemistry, practically all industries, knowingly or otherwise, make use of the principles of surface chemistry. Countless cosmetic and pharmaceutical products are emulsions—lotions, creams, ointments, suppositories, etc. Food emulsions include milk, margarine, salad dressings and sauces. Adhesive emulsions, emulsion paints, self-polishing waxes, waterless hand cleaners and emulsifiable insecticide concentrates are commonplace examples of emulsions, which fall within the province of surface chemistry. Other products winch function in accordance with the principles of smface chemistry include detergents of every variety, fabric softeners, antistatic agents, mold releases, dispersants and flocculants. 

DOW CORNING 75 emulsion is a reactive, methyl silicone emulsion especially designed for use as a water repellent for all types of fabrics. When used with a catalyst, it provides water repellency used alone it functions as a fabric softener. 

MYKON EJ softener is very effective when used with permanent press resin finishes. It improves sewability and tear strength of cotton, rayon, and polyester/cellulosic blends without effecting chlorine resistance, lightfastness or scorch resistance of the finished fabric. MYKON EJ emulsion also softens the treated fabric. 

The surfactant system of the emulsion can influence silicone deposition. This exceeds 80% when the surfactant is cationic and falls in the 60 to 80% range when the surfactant is nonionic [27], Anionic emulsifiers are incompatible with cationic fabric softeners. 

Liquid fabric softeners are formulated by dispersing the melted raw material in well-stirred hot water. Although DHTDMAC aqueous dispersions are not emulsions in the strict sense, chemical and mechanical principles of emulsification apply to control the viscosity and phase stability [10]. 

Although a fabric softener is not an emulsion but a suspension of charged particles, it exhibits the same instabilities as an emulsion. The physical stability is twofold phase separation and viscosity.

The formulation class (tooth paste, shampoo, fabric softener, etc.) provides basic information about the components present. Standard shampoo formulations contain two types of surfactants (either two anionic or one anionic and one amphoteric surfactant) foam booster (nonionic surfactant) conditioner, viscosity improver, opacifier, dye, perfume, chelate, and preservatives. Normally, formulated products are available as liquid, solid, emulsion, dispersion, etc, with a great number of components (in some cosmetic products there may be 20 components) and some of them, such as the preservatives, are found at low concentrations.

Dimethicone copolyol has been used to help make stable emulsions and dispersions of silicone fluid in detergent applications. In addition, the fact that the dimethicone copolyol is nonionic makes it compatible with both cationic and anionic systems. Consequently, one would expect to encounter the use of these materials to couple silicone fluid into fabric softeners and laundry detergent systems.
