Some chemical additives such as corrosion inhibitors, wax crystal modifiers, detergents, and demulsifiers provide performance which is difficult to duplicate through refining without adversely affecting some other fuel property. Other additives such as metal chelators, fuel sweeteners, biocides, lubricity improvers, foam control agents and combustion enhancers can also be used to solve fuel performance problems.

A moderately lipophilic emulsifier and foam control agent, is useful as an emulsifier for polar and non-polar solvents, as spreading agent in pigment printing, and as a post-stabilizer in emulsion polymerization. An emulsifier in textile jet dye carrier applications. 

Foams. Refined lecithins have been employed as effective foam control agents. Examples include whipped toppings, ice creams, and many types of candies. Refined lecithin products have also been employed as effective defoaming agents in foams caused by powdered proteins in water. This is an excellent example of the system specificity of lecithin products (7). 

Poly(propylene oxide) is typically obtained by base catalyzed anionic polymerization of propylene oxide [12]. Both stereospecific and atactic forms are known. The polymer is used as a soft polyether unit in polyurethane elastomers and foams in polymer electrolytes as surfactants (lubricants, dispersants, antistatic agents, foam control agents) in printing inks, as solubilizers in hydraulic fluids, coolant compositions in various medical applications (protective bandages, drug delivery systems, organ preservation, dental compositions), etc.

Fatty acids may be converted by fungi after hydrolysis by lipase. Other organic acid carbon sources would be oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids. These might also serve as foam control agents. Carbon dioxide is a possible carbon source in nature, but is not practical commercially due to low growth rates.
