Some of the important issues and needs for chemical product design are... 

It is important to collect information on various chemical product design applications in the form of case studies, as they can help to understand the issues and needs related to the development of more efficient and versatile methods and tools. Also, they serve as examples in teaching of chemical product design. 

The second challenge is to relate the desired product attributes to the material properties of the ingredients and the structure of the product. For example, the development process would have been much more efficient if a model was available to describe the behavior of cleansing bars and structured food products. Without the benefits of predictive models, as is the present status for many consumer products, extensive trial-and-error by experiments are required. Even if a comprehensive model based on first principles is not available, a combination of physical insights and heuristics can still help improve the development process. Chapters 1-2 report some new developments in this area. See also [11] for a more detailed discussion on the issues and needs related to the roles and uses of property models in product design. 

Some drugs situations are frankly confusing and need to be explored in greater depth. For example, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is produced in the body as a natural defense against the many spontaneous tumors that arise in the body and has been suggested as a treatment for cancer, which may very well be effective under some conditions. However, TNF is also believed to be involved in the pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, and monoclonal antibodies with specific activity against TNF are now on the market. The use of TNF is therefore a complex issue and needs to be evaluated with considerable care. 

If the recovery (2.3.21) of the analyte is less than 100%, ideally the detection limit should be corrected for the average recovery. However, this is a contentious issue and needs to be considered carefully for each method. 

Although the need for clinical pharmacy faculty members will likely continue, the transformation that is occurring in higher education will make the expectations of faculty in the future different than what they have been in the past. Individuals contemplating an academic pharmacy career must have a clear understanding about the current issues and needs in order to make informed career decisions. 

The Working Group meets biannually in conjunction with the Electrochemical Society Meetings, allowing us to assess progress and to communicate issues and needs to the High-Temperature-Membrane community at large.

The American Psychiatric Association has a similar but smaller group of volunteers in its Committee on the Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster. The committee sponsors an introductory course on psychiatric aspects of disasters and a disaster workshop at the Annual Meeting and has developed written and audiovisual materials and distributed them to each of the Association s 77 district branches. In addition to this national level committee, many district branches have disaster committees which respond to local issues and needs. A summary of a 1996 conference on the role of psychiatrists in disasters, jointly sponsored with the American Red Cross and posted on the Internet at www.psych.org, suggested a number of initiatives aimed at educating psychiatrists about the Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Services and fostering a partnership between the two organizations. 

As summarized in Figure 38.1, CAD-like human performance software depends on conceptual issues as well as decisions regarding fidelity, functionality, and implementation. There is also a great deal of interaction among these categories. In this chapter, the current status, major issues, and needs for fiber eoatings are diseussed. This diseussion includes the status of the vendor base needed to commercialize fiber coatings. Although ceramic fibers were diseussed in Chapter 4 and matrix materials are beyond the scope of this report, the effeetiveness of the fiber/matrix interfaee is system dependent. Therefore, system approaches, such as the use of matrix additives to inhibit oxidation, will also be discussed in this chapter. 

Therefore, simple and reliable fabrication of nano-sensing channels, especially integrated with microchannels or the reservoirs, is still a critical issue and needs great research for the wide application of this technology. 

This is a major maintenance issue and needs to be considered.
