Disease cancer

Inositols, ie, hexaliydrobenzenehexols, are sugars that have received increasing study and are useful in the treatment of a wide variety of human disorders, including vascular disease, cancer, cirrhosis of the Hver, frostbite, and muscular dystrophy (269). Myoinositol esters prepared by reaction with lower fatty acid anhydrides are useful as Hver medicines and nonionic surfactants the aluminum and ammonium salts of inositol hexasulfate are useful anticancer agents (270). Tetraarjloxybenzoquinones are intermediates in the preparation of dioxazine dyes (266,271). The synthesis of hexakis(aryloxy)benzenes has also beenpubUshed (272). [Pg.391]

Ascorbic acid also forms soluble chelate complexes with iron (142—145). It seems ascorbic acid has no effect on high iron levels found in people with iron overload (146). It is well known, in fact, that ascorbic acid in the presence of iron can exhibit either prooxidant or antioxidant effects, depending on the concentration used (147). The combination of citric acid and ascorbic acid may enhance the iron load in aging populations. Iron overload may be the most important common etiologic factor in the development of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, and possibly other disorders. The synergistic combination of citric acid and ascorbic acid needs further study, particularly because the iron overload produced may be correctable (147). [Pg.22]

However, when used in excess it can lead to a wide range of physical and mental problems, e.g. heart and liver disease, cancers, increased risk of stroke, mood and personality changes and dementia (Korsakoff s psychosis). [Pg.123]

Just as TCM, all of the other complementary medicines work mainly in those areas where modern medicine can not produce remarkable or immediate efficacy, such as immunological disease, degenerative diseases, cancer, and mental disorders. Few people will seek alternative resolutions for diseases in which effective treatment is already available, even in the places where complementary medicine is very popular. [Pg.119]

The field of pharmacogenomics is still in its infancy. Its use is currently quite limited, but new approaches are under study in clinical trials. In the future, pharmacogenomics will allow the development of tailored drugs to treat a wide range of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer disease, cancer, HIV/ AIDS, and asthma. [Pg.49]

Previous discussion has dealt with diseases caused by an alteration in a single gene or in a specific chromosome. Most common diseases heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc.) have substantial genetic components, but their causation is complex. This chapter reviews some basic principles of the genetics of common, complex diseases. [Pg.333]

Along with coronary heart disease, cancer is one of the major causes of death in developed countries and increasingly so in developing countries. At least one person in three in developed countries will develop cancer and one in four men and one in five women will die from it. The incidence of cancer increases with age, particularly above 45 years. Although the number of cases of cancer is expected to be more than 14 million worldwide by 2020, it is claimed that most cancers are avoidable because they are caused by unhealthy food, an unhealthy lifestyle and/or... [Pg.485]

Most drugs are made from or with highly toxic or poisonous chemicals, if used improperly they can cause disease, cancer, or immediate death. Even the most simple of chemical reactions are not to be taken lightly or unprofessionally. Go to a college or some other type of professional laboratory and ask if they will show you around seven times out of ten they will give you a tour. Look over their equipment notice the cleanliness of even the floor. Look at the chemists themselves see how serious and professional they act. This is how your laboratory should look. [Pg.1]
